Grace Century portfolio project, Provia Laboratories, announced the appointment of Dr. James A. Manganello, Chairman of the Board, to the National Stem Cell Ethics Committee (NSCEC) of The Bahamas. The appointment was made by the Ministry of Health on behalf of the Government of The Bahamas on September 24th, 2014.

More than a year after Bahamian Parliament passed the Stem Cell Therapy and Research Bill, Prime Minister Perry Christie said the government has completed the accompanying regulations and expects to begin approving applications for stem cell centers this month. Dr. Gomez, Minister of Health, said that the regulation of the stem cell therapy industry will lessen the potential for abuse and will ensure the highest standards of research and treatments are adhered to. Three committees have been established; the National Stem Cell Ethics Committee (NSCEC), the Scientific Committee, and the Compliance Committee.

The NSCEC will issue guidelines and approve or deny proposals for stem cell research and therapy. The Compliance Committee will be responsible for ensuring that all stem cell and research guidelines are adhered to. The Scientific Committee will review recommendations from local scientific boards regarding proposed protocols for stem cell research in categories designated by the NSCEC. Gomez said, once the committees become operational, The Bahamas will be one of the first nations with the necessary professional environment, and can potentially lead the world in this new arena that is fascinating while utilizing new technologies, creativity and innovations.

OTTAWA - A coalition of Canadian stem cell advocates, researchers and charities is calling for $1.5 billion in private and public funding for stem cell therapy over the next 10 years.

The coalition's action plan is aimed at cementing Canada's reputation as a stem cell leader, one that uses stem cell science to reduce suffering and death from cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, vision loss, spinal cord injuries and other conditions.

James Price, the president and CEO of the Canadian Stem Cell Foundation, says the action plan could help millions of people with new, life-changing therapies.

The action plan's call for funding includes a $50 million scaled annual average commitment by the federal government.

The Centre for Commercialization of Regenerative Medicine estimates the action plan could also create more than 12,000 jobs due to the growth of existing companies and the development of new enterprises aimed at global markets.

A coalition of prominent scientists, entrepreneurs and charities is calling on Ottawa to commit half a billion dollars over the next 10 years to boost stem cell research and development in Canada.

The request to the federal government works out to one-third of the $1.5-billion in private and public funding the group says this country needs to remain at or near the top of a field that two Canadian scientists helped found with their discovery of adult stem cells in the early 1960s.

The rest of the world is not standing still, said Alan Bernstein, chair of the Canadian Stem Cell Foundation, the scientific charity that spearheaded the new Canadian Stem Cell Strategy and Action Plan, unveiled Wednesday in Ottawa. We risk slowing down our investment while the rest of the world is speeding up, so relatively we will fall further and further behind. This sort of research and the clinical trials are both long-term [prospects]. They need sustained investment and they are expensive.

In an accompanying report by the consulting firm KPMG, the coalition laid out its goal of producing between five and 10 new made-in-Canada therapies that could transform the health-care landscape in the next decade, such as developing a cell therapy to cure diabetes or using stem cells to potentially regenerate scarred tissue after a heart attack.

If the funding materializes, Canadas stem cell industry could create 20 new companies, $405-million in tax revenue and more than 12,000 jobs and between 2015 and 2025, according to the Centre for Commercialization of Regenerative Medicine, a not-for-profit organization that tries to move stem-cell breakthroughs from the lab to the clinic.

The CCRM is one of a slew of organizations and companies participating in the coalition. Dr. Bernstein said some corporations and philanthropists have already offered to contribute financially, but the group is hoping Ottawa will come through with major funding averaging $50-million a year that could act as a catalyst for private-sector contributors.

Canadian scientists James Till and Ernest McCulloch demonstrated the existence of adult stem cells in Toronto in 1961.

Stem cells are unspecialized cells that have the unique ability to regenerate as they divide. Under certain conditions, stem cells can grow into organ or tissue cells with specific functions, which is why some scientists have invested so much hope in them as potential treatments or cures for Parkinsons disease, spinal cord injuries and multiple sclerosis, among other ailments.

An estimated 16,000 Canadians live with scleroderma, an incurable autoimmune disorder which causes the body to produce too much collagen, resulting in a hardening of the skin and tissue. There is no cure for the scleroderma, but some patients in Canada are now seeking a costly and experimental stem cell therapy in the U.S.

A little over a year ago, Mike Berry of Kingston, Ont., started having trouble breathing. It was the first sign of scleroderma.

Berry, 42, suffers from the systemic version of scleroderma, which attacks his internal organs. His lungs have been scarred by the disorder, with his lung capacity dropping to 41 per cent in just nine months. His disease may ultimately be fatal.

He described to CTV News how scleroderma has impacted his day-to-day life.

"I'm unable to work any longer; it affects me and everything now," he said. "It's hard to walk fast; I can't walk and talk."

Drugs to treat his scleroderma haven't worked, so now Berry is trying to fundraise more than $150,000 for an experimental U.S. stem cell treatment called Autologous Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT), in the hopes that it will save his life.

"It would give me as second chance, I guess I just have a lot to fight for," he said.

Pioneered by Dr. Richard Burt at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, patients receiving HSCT are administered stem cells intravenously.

During the treatment, the patient's stem cells are harvested, and then the patient's over-active immune system is destroyed with powerful chemotherapy drugs. Doctors then re-program the patient's immune system with the harvested stem cells, in the hopes that the cells will "reset" the patient's immune system and stop scleroderma.
