Please schedule a consultation with one of our stem cell experts to find out how this treatment can benefit you 719-632-7669.
Stem cell therapy is a cutting-edge procedure developed to regenerate new, healthy tissue at the site of an injury or wound. An injection of stem cells provides an immediate boost to the bodys natural healing power, resulting in faster recovery from injuries.
Stem cell therapy is used to treat several conditions including tendon injuries, cartilage injuries, muscle injuries, fascial injuries, and injured nerves. It can also be used to shorten recovery time after surgery.
Stem cell therapy is similar to getting a cortisone shot. The injection will be given as close as possible to the source of pain or injury to provide the most effective relief. The injection site will be numbed, making the entire process quick, easy, and practically painless.
The stem cells we use at Colorado Springs Orthopaedic Group come primarily from umbilical cord/Whartons jelly products. They are harvested following the birth of a child by cesarean section (C-section). The umbilical cord is typically discarded unless it is used for stem cell harvesting. Using umbilical cord/Whartons jelly stem cells is a safe, well-developed method used in many areas of medicine. These stem cells do not contain the proteins that cause an adverse immune reaction preventing your body from rejecting it.
At the time of Caesarian delivery, the baby is delivered healthy and the umbilical cord/Whartons jelly (which in the past were typically discarded) are collected with maternal consent. The donors are between 18 and 35 years old, are healthy, and have no prior use of medication or other chemical substances. Maternal history is analyzed and blood tested. There is no harm done during recovery.
For long-term pain relief and healing without surgery, call us at (719) 632-7669 and find out if you are a candidate for stem cell therapy.

Using Stem Cells to Treat Sepsis – Stem Cell Centers, Colorado
Posted: November 28, 2018 at 5:45 am
Researchers tested a kind of bone marrow stem cell to discover if it could help treat sepsis. They found that these stem cells could triple the odds of a person surviving the condition.
Sepsis is a life-threatening response to an infection. It is triggered when an established infection somewhere in your body (skin, lungs, urinary tract, etc.) causes an extreme immune response by your body. The aftermath sepsis leaves in its wake is shocking. In just a short amount of time, it can cause tissue damage, organ failure and death.
Fever, low blood pressure, increased heart rate, and increased breathing rate along with lab tests that check for signs of infection and organ damage are current methods used by doctors for diagnosing sepsis. However, since the symptoms of sepsis (like difficulty breathing and fever) mirror symptoms for other conditions, it can be challenging to effectively diagnose sepsis in its early stages.
While the first modern view of sepsis dates back to the early 19th century, little progress has been made in treating it.
Current protocols are to give antibiotics, maintain blood flow to organs, and treat the source of the infection. Patients receive oxygen and intravenous (IV) fluids to maintain blood flow and oxygen to organs. Sometimes surgery is required to remove tissue damaged by the infection.
Antibiotics are the go-to method of treatment and can offer some help, but researchers have been trying to find a more effective treatment option for centuries.
Now, stem cells are offering a new angle on fighting the fight against sepsis and infections.
It is common knowledge in the stem-cell science field that mesenchymal stem cells support immune system function and regeneration of damaged tissues. Scientists tested a theory that bone marrow stem cell could treat sepsis and discovered that stem cells could actually triple the odds of a person surviving a bout with sepsis.
Researchers conducted an experiment on a group of mice with sepsis. The level of sepsis the mice had in their bodies caused infection and organ damage. At the height of infection, the scientists administered injections of bone marrow stem cells to some of the mice, and not to others so they could compare the outcomes. Five days later, half the mice that had received stem cell treatment were still alive. Only fifteen percent of the mice that didnt receive the stem cell treatment were still alive.
It was also found that the mice that received the stem cell injections had better overall health, less inflammation throughout the body, and less bacteria. Their ability to fight infection was stronger than before the injections.
One of the most encouraging results of the experiment was how fast the stem cell worked on the sepsis state. Because of how quickly sepsis can attack tissues and organs, it is important to find a treatment option that allows for quick results.
The Centers for Disease Control report that 1.5 million Americans contract sepsis each year with 250,000 of that number dying. One in three of patients that die in the hospital have sepsis, says the CDC. A major cause of mortality in intensive care units is sepsis. By using stem cells to treat sepsis, these hundreds of thousands of lives that fall victim to sepsis each year could be saved, along with billions of dollars spent on immediate and on-going care for those that survive, but who survive with long-term damage.
The stem-cell treatment advantage is that it not only buoys the health of a specific organ or part of the body, but the mesenchymal stem cells also assist along the entire path the infection traversed, reducing the risk of long-term tissue and organ damage as well.
Finding an effective, fast-moving treatment option to halt the life-threatening, life-altering effects of sepsis is of immediate concern to scientists, doctors, and the medical community at large. Using stem cells to treat sepsis could provide that long-needed treatment option. Stem cell therapy is a cutting-edge area of medicine, which can seem nearly magical in its results. Thousands of qualified doctors and researchers work hard to ensure that patients get the best possible medical care, and stem cell therapy has promising results. But, like all new areas of medicine, it can be difficult for stem cell therapy to be seen as completely credible. Why? Because of the entry of chiropractors and other alternative health practitioners into the field.
While chiropractic therapy can be a valuable pain relief tool for many patients, it can become dangerous when chiropractors extend too far beyond their own training and skill. Some chiropractors have begun to offer more medicalized services, including medical weight loss, hormone replacement anti-aging therapies, and stem cell therapies. While these treatments are in use throughout the medical world, they are usually overseen by a highly trained and experienced MD or DO physician.
Orthopedic stem cell therapies have experienced a popularity growth of epic proportions, as patients seeking pain relief find help through the treatment. While stem cell therapy, when appropriately supervised and administered, can bring wondrous results, it can also become a public health and safety issue when administered by those who are not trained or equipped to do so.
Often, the patients own stem cells are harvested to perform stem cell therapy. But underqualified and under experienced chiropractors and alternative health practitioners may not have the ability to do so. Instead, they often turn to amniotic stem cells, an off-the-shelf answer to stem cell procurement. Unfortunately, there is no such product that has been approved as safe for medical use by the FDA.
Processed amniotic fluid and tissue products were often claimed to be amniotic stem cell products, but independent testing revealed that the products only appeared to have living stem cells. These so-called amniotic stem cells were actually only dead tissue, and about as effective as a sugar pill. To unsuspecting patients, however, amniotic stem cell products looked like a cost-effective answer.
The Stem Cell Institute of America (SCIA) is one of the leading chiropractic practice management groups, which was responsible for adding medical services such as stem cell treatments with amniotic stem cells. Further investigation into the company found that the president of the company had been previously convicted of healthcare fraud for billing insurance companies for services never rendered.
This companys product, PalinGen Flow, was being used in chiropractic offices across the country for stem cell therapy. This amniotic product was found to have no living cells by the Interventional Orthopedic Foundation (IOF). The SCIA continues to administer dead amniotic tissue under the guise of performing legitimate stem cell therapy with living and active stem cells. The legitimacy of their claims and the ability of the care providers to even administer the treatments are questions that should seriously concern those in the stem cell therapy field.
According to their own claims, the SCIA is providing living stem cell treatment to patients, using products that have been found to contain no living stem cells. It would appear that stem cell fraud is a new issue to be faced, and providers like the SCIA are wrongfully providing false treatment to hopeful patients.

Stem Cell Therapy | Spine & Joint Solutions – Colorado Springs

Stem cell therapy is an exciting part of a rapidly growing area within medicine termed Regenerative Medicine. Stem cells are cells that have the opportunity to become several different tissue types and also have the ability to self-replicate. Stem cells are found throughout the body in certain tissues and in varying concentrations. Bone marrow and adipose tissue both have high concentrations of stem cells and are readily available within the body.
Bone Marrow Aspiration (BMA)
At Spine & Joint Solutions, a procedure called bone marrow aspiration is performed to collect stem cells for use in areas of injury. The procedure is performed at a surgical center so that sterile technique can be used, as well as x-ray guidance to ensure that the whole procedure is as safe as possible. The aspiration process typically takes between 5 and 10 minutes and begins with having a patient lie on a bed on his/her stomach. The iliac crest bone, or top ridge of the hip bone, is the location chosen from which to draw bone marrow out. The region is sterilized and then anesthetized to reduce any discomfort. A needle is then advanced into the iliac crest, and only of the amount of bone marrow product that is needed for treatment is aspirated from the region. The needle is then removed. Given that the bone marrow aspiration technique that is used by Dr. Martin is the most advanced on the market at this time and effectively concentrates the product during the aspiration process, no centrifuge duration of the bone marrow is necessary. This, in turn, shortens the overall procedure and causes less potential harm to the bone marrow product. The bone marrow aspiration (BMA) product is then ready to be injected into the desired area. If the target is the joints or soft tissue, then an ultrasound is used to help guide the needle directly into the region of damage. If the target is the spine, a fluoroscope (x-ray machine) is used to help guide the needle into the region of damage. When stem cells are placed in an area of degeneration or injury within the body, these cells have the ability to decrease local inflammation and heal damaged tissue.
Donor Stem Cells
There are certain situations in which using bone marrow-derived stem cells is not the best option. In these situations, further discussions about donor stem cells are reasonable and necessary. Any individual who is known to have a chronic illness, such as a rheumatologic condition, or a person who has been treated with chemotherapy or radiation, may not have extremely healthy stem cells, as your stem cells are only as healthy as you are. In addition, more recent literature has outlined that any individual over the age of 60 should consider using donor stem cells due to having a low concentration of stem cells within their own body.
Following a health, full-term delivery, the placenta and umbilical cord may be collected. Stem cells are then collected from the Whartons jelly within the umbilical cord. The final stem cell product is then placed in a vial and stored at -196. At the time of your treatment, the product is thawed within the vial, drawn into a syringe and placed into the target area under either ultrasound or fluoroscope guidance.
Stem cell therapy is a safe and conservative treatment option for multiple musculoskeletal conditions, including joint degeneration, cartilage injury, tendon injury, ligament injury, facet joint injury and disc injury.
All regenerative medicine patients at Spine & Joint Solutions will receive a comprehensive approach to their treatment process. This will include a full consultation, during which all questions will be answered. A packet will be provided that includes information on what to expect before, during and after the procedure. This will include post-injection protocols and activity modifications, as well as what to expect from the rehabilitation process, which begins four weeks after the injection. An outline describing an anti-inflammatory diet, suggested supplements, and recipes will also be included. Patients may be asked to wear a brace or use crutches to offload the joint or spine region that was treated.
Additionally, each patient who undergoes treatment with either PRF or stem cells will be asked to take part in the research that is being conducted at Spine & Joint Solutions. This will consist of filling out simple questionnaires before treatment and again at specific points following treatment. Repeat imaging may be pursued to ensure tissue healing.

The Role of Unhealthy Joint Tissues in Osteoarthritis, and the Role of Stem Cells in the Cure
We now know that osteoarthritis (OA) is much more than just wear and tear. There are numerous maladaptive changes to a joint with OA. An osteoarthritic joint is besieged with substances that eat away at healthy hyaline (joint) cartilage. These are certain matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and interleukins secreted from the synovium (joint lining) of an arthritic joint. In addition, the native long chain hyaluronic acid molecules that help normalize and lubricate healthy joints is chopped into smaller, less effective pieces. In addition, the bone under the hyaline cartilage (subchondral bone) is inflammatory and structurally abnormal, and results in increased breakdown of hyaline cartilage because it is inflammatory and because it is not as good at absorbing and dissipating forces such as the force across the cartilage from walking or running. Here is a corroborating December 2017 article on the overall research and clinical benefits of stem cell therapy.

Abstract
Cartilage disorders, including focal cartilage lesions, are among the most common clinical problems in orthopedic practice. Left untreated, large focal lesions may result in progression to osteoarthritis, with tremendous impact on the quality of life of affected individuals. Current management strategies have shown only a modest degree of success, while several upcoming interventions signify better outcomes in the future. Among these, stem cell therapies have been suggested as a promising new era for cartilage disorders. Certain characteristics of the stem cells, such as their potential to differentiate but also to support healing made them a fruitful candidate for lesions in cartilage, a tissue with poor healing capacity. The aim of this editorial is to provide an update on the recent advancements in the field of stem cell therapy for the management of focal cartilage defects. Our goal is to present recent basic science advances and to present the potential of the use of stem cells in novel clinical interventions towards the enhancement of the treatment armamentarium for cartilage lesions. Furthermore, we highlight some thoughts for the future of cartilage regeneration and repair and to explore future perspectives for the next steps in the field.

PRO-LIFE VICTORY: PEPSI BOYCOTT ENDED!
April 30, 2012: PepsiCo has ceased their fetal cell research and recently adopted this policy: "PepsiCo does not conduct or fund research that utilizes any human tissue or cell lines derived from embryos or fetuses."Further, Pepsi VP of Global Public Policy, Paul Boykas, wrote that, Senomyx will not use HEK cells or any other tissues or cell lines derived from human embryos or fetuses for research performed on behalf of PepsiCo.
We are absolutely thrilled with PepsiCos decision, stated Debi Vinnedge, boycott organizer with Children of God for Life. They have listened to their customers and have made both a wise and profound statement of corporate integrity that deserves the utmost respect, admiration and support of the public. CRTL thanks Debi Vinnedge and our Vice President Leslie Hanks agreed: "Colorado Right To Life appreciates PepsiCo for their policy prohibiting the grisly practice of using tissue from aborted children." Hanks added, "No responsible corporation can violate this PepsiCo policy."
FOR ARCHIVAL PURPOSES ONLY:
Coke & Campbell's Pull Out: Pepsi Digs In: Debi Vinnedge, executive director of Florida'sChildren of God for Life, in exposing another abortion horror, has convinced Campbell's Soups to immediately end their taste testing research using aborted baby cells. Coca Cola, though never contacting Vinnedge, also ended their relationship with Senomyx, the biotech company conducting the flavor-enhancing research using an aborted baby's kidney cells to produce "human taste receptors". When new drink ingredients are put in contact with these cells, researchers note whether or not the cells produce certain protein reactions. (The same research can be done ethically using adult stem cells and in other ways.)

Pepsi Boycott Begins: Neither Coca Cola nor Campbell's Soups should ever have entered into such grotesque research, but both companies have since done the right thing by ending their partnership with Senomyx' food research on an aborted baby's cells. However, as announced on Denver radio, vice president Leslie Hanks, on behalf of the nation's first right-to-life group, has committed Colorado Right To Life to join Debi Vinnedge's call for a boycott of all Pepsi beverages including:Pepsi & Diet Pepsi,Mountain Dew,Sierra Mist,Gatorade,Propel,Tropicana Orange Juice,Bottled Lipton ice teas,Bottled Starbucks Frappucinos, andAquafina Water.

By definition, stem cells are undifferentiated biological cells that can differentiate into specialized cells and divide to produce more stem cells. There are three ways adult stem cells can be obtained: from bone marrow, adipose tissue, or blood.
Unlike embryonic stem cells, the use of adult stem cells in research and therapy is not considered to be controversial, as they are derived from adult tissue samples rather than discarded human embryos. By law, these adult stem cells have to be injected or infused into the patient within 24 hours after being obtained.
Adult stem cells have the ability to divide and generate all cell types of the organ from which they originate. They possess two properties: self-renewal and multi-potency, meaning they can go through numerous cycles of cell division while still maintaining their undifferentiated state. Stem cells hold the ability to generate into several distinct cell types, including neural cells found in the brain.
Regenerative stem cell therapy can stimulate tissue re-growth and greater blood flow to the affected areas.* The goal of treatment with stem cells is to replace damaged cells and to promote the growth of new blood vessels and tissues in order to help the target organ function at a greater capacity.*
