BEAUTY AND HER BRAIN: Former figure skater and SUNshine Girl talks concussions – Toronto Sun
Posted: December 12, 2019 at 12:41 pm
Its tale of beauty battling her brain.
Former figure skater Riley Sawyer, 20, who has graced the pages of the Sun as a top SUNshine Girl for the past two years, opened recently up about her battle with multiple concussions at least 15 to date.
She is now working with a new mental health program called Head1st that helps those dealing with mental issues stemming from their trauma.
I want to inspire people to know that they are not alone. They are not the only ones who feel like I did, said Sawyer. Because I heard so much about the physical health of, but never the mental health.
As a young teenager, Sawyer was outgoing and her aunt Teena Sawyer, a figure skating coach, took an interest in her niece and became a big influence in her life motivating her to take up figure skating at 13 years old.
Yes my aunt was a crazy good figure skater. She was a coach out of the Whitby figure skating club, said Sawyer.
But at that same time as far as she can remember she incurred her first concussion skating and it has crept in and become part of her life, sometimes leaving her in a dark place. She also now suffers from short-term memory loss.
Like any teen, she enjoyed sports like ringette and soccer. As an athlete, she suffered bumps and lumps along the way.
The worst I ever got was playing ringette in high school in a mixed class, said Sawyer. All I remember is this big guy just came at me full steam and crashed into me.
I went hard to the gym floor, but I got back up.

Thats what most athletes did before recent research, they toughed it out. But after the ringette episode, Sawyer knew something was wrong.
She figures her get up and go, no-quit attitude of competing hard has led to as many as 15 concussions.
Even though she has since embarked on a safer career in modelling, Sawyer said by the end of the day she just wants to curl up in a ball with her little service dog Baby a 12-year old Chihuahua-Pomeranian mix.
Then she recently stumbled upon a program on Instagram called Head1st.
It is a Concussion Awareness program put together by new-found friend Cody Oehm, 27, who hails from Owen Sound.
The program helps let those dealing with concussions know they are not alone and can look beyond the dark room, depression, anxiety and even suicidal thoughts.
Oehmsaid he was diagnosed and hospitalized with three concussions while playing competitive hockey with the Walkerton Hawks in the Ontario C league at the age of 20.
I was hospitalized and it lead to a bunch of physical and mental health issues, said Oehm. The underlying issues lead to inflammation on my brain that cut off the production of hormones.
Oehm said he was an outgoing kid, but he started shying away from everything and within a few months he was in a dark place with suicidal thoughts and dealing with pretty deep anxiety.
By 24, he was working with an endocronologist who put him on hormone replacement therapy, which made him better within a four to six weeks.
The mission of Head1st is to make the world aware of the issue of the impact concussions can have on hormones and mental health, said Oehm.
After sharing his experiences on Facebook, his inbox was flooded with thousands of messages from people with similar stories.
I realized this was more common than originally thought, said Oehm. And about 20% of the people affected have some sort of Pituitary dysfunction after the fact.
Sawyer has now jumped on board to start researching her own health with the help of Head1st to sort out her myriad issues.
This past week Sawyer met up with her former figure skating coach Ryan Shollert at Centennial Recreation Centre in Scarborough and laced up her blades to confront her demons.
Both hit the fresh sheet of ice with Shollert getting Sawyer to limber up first, knowing full well she might be a bit rusty like her skates after not being on the ice for a few years.
Sawyer glided into some easy moves like corkscrews and camel spins, smiling from ear-to-ear with the minor accomplishments.
Her confidence soared.
But at the end of the 30-minute session as she pulled off her furry white headband drank some water bottle, somewhat winded, she confided Shollert noticed she was struggling a bit and kept her calm and focused.
I thought I was going to puke out there, said Sawyer. But I didnt tell him that
Nowadays Sawyer loves being in front of the camera. But she said that can also be taxing.
Some may think it is easy to get in front of the camera and Vogue yet at the end of the day it is exhausting.
After her recent SUNshine Girl shoot and video interview she said she went home and slept really well and was refreshed in the morning.
She hates not competing and loves letting her mind and brain flow freely even though it may be a bit foggy some days.
But she has found new optimism by putting her head first.

George Washington University hosted Transgiving on Sunday, where students discussed the impacts of colonialism throughout the world.
GWU hosted the event on Nov. 17 as part of its Trans Awareness Week 2019, which included several similar events such as a Class Council Drag Show, and Transcestry event where students were invited to remember and celebrate the past, present, and future of the transgender community.
don't have to be trans to eat the food"
The Transgiving event description reassured students that they don't have to be trans to eat the food, and can be non-binary or genderqueer or agender or genderfluid or bigender or femme or masc or andro or... an ally!
[RELATED: University invites students to 'Decolonize your Thanksgiving']
The event page states that since the usage of the word Thanksgiving is involved, a Native American student group will discuss some of the impacts of colonialism on Native Americans.
And since we are using the terminology of Thanksgiving, we want to give space to the Native American and Indigenous communities for which the season is especially taxing, the description explains. As such, Students for Indigenous and Native American Rights have graciously offered to speak about the impacts of colonialism on Indigenous genders throughout the world.
Another event titled HRTea Party seeks to inform students about hormone therapy, and specifically invites students who are questioning whether the therapy is right for them.

Everything women need to know about menopause – PhillyVoice.com
Posted: November 29, 2019 at 11:42 am
Menopause, when a woman no longer has menstrual periods, is a natural part of life, but it can be a major upheaval, especially when symptoms are severe. Are you approaching menopause and worried about what to expect? Here is everything you need to know.
Most women hit this milestone in their early 50s. According toWomen's Health, the average age for onset of menopause is 52. Some women, however, reach menopause in their 40s or earlier.Early menopauseoccurs between the ages of 40 and 45. A small percentage of women may even experience what is called premature menopause before the age of 40. A woman is not considered to be in menopause until she hasn't experienced any menstrual bleeding, even spotting, for 12 months consecutively, and can no longer become pregnant.
A woman's hormone levels are going to change gradually as her body reaches menopause. This transition to menopause is referred to as perimenopause. During this phase, you will start to experience irregular periods which may be lighter or heavier than usual or of varying duration. You may even have months where there is no menstrual bleeding at all.
Why is this happening? The ovaries are no longer consistently producing the same levels of the hormones estrogen and progesterone. Some women will even start to have hot flashes and other symptoms.
Perimenopause for most women typically begins in the mid- to late-40s, and it can take about 4 years for menstrual periods to completely stop. For some women though the transition can be as short as two years and for others as long as 8 years.
The most important thing to remember, if you don't want a surprise pregnancy, is to continue practicing birth control for at least a year after your last period.
Menopause symptomsoften begin during perimenopause. The most common are irregular periods, vaginal dryness, hot flashes, trouble sleeping, night sweats, mood changes, weight gain, dry skin and thinning hair.
Your risk for certain health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis and urinary incontinence may also increase. Once a woman reaches menopause, some symptoms like hot flashes may abate a little, occurring less frequently or at least less severely.
While there is no way to prevent menopause, there are certain lifestyle changes you can make to reduce the severity of the symptoms. Here are some suggestions fromWomen's Health,The Mayo ClinicandHarvard Health)
Certain medications also can help. There has been conflicting evidence about hormone replacement therapy however.Harvard Healthcautions that some studies have shown that estrogen therapy has been linked to an increased risk for heart disease, stroke, breast cancer and blood clots. On the positive side though, it reduces the risk of fracture and colon cancer. If you are considering hormone replacement therapy, talk to your gynecologist about all the possible benefits and risks.

Doctors have recommended the surgery to Anna because she has suffered from endometriosis since she was a teen and it has come back so severely since Sids birth that she also needs to have part of her intestine removed as it has attacked her bowel, too.
But she toldOK! magazinethat having Sid made the news easier to bear, saying: "Having a hysterectomy without having already had a child, would have been horrendous."
Talking about how endometriosis affects her, she said: "Im on pain relief every day. After the operation, theres less chance of it coming back again. I just want to get rid of it and recover. Ive suffered since I was 16 years old but it was years before I was properly diagnosed."
Wallace admitted: "Im not looking forward to Anna having the operation, but Im looking forward to her being out of pain.

Anna is expecting to be in hospital for 10 days and recovering for three months, but said that the fact her mum lives with them full-time would help.
She added that her dad also planned to move in with them once he had sold his business in Coventry.
After the surgery, Anna faces being on hormone replacement therapy permanently afterwards, but said that she had never expected to be able to be a mum because of her condition.

Newspaper headlines: Chief Rabbi’s Corbyn warning and care ‘revolution’ – BBC News
Posted: November 29, 2019 at 11:42 am
An intervention by Britain's most senior Jewish leader, the Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, leads the Times - which calls his attack on Jeremy Corbyn "an unprecedented intervention into politics".
Several other papers pick up the story. The Daily Telegraph describes the Chief Rabbi's words as "excoriating". "Convention dictates," says the Daily Mail, "that Britain's religious leaders give politics a wide berth, especially during general elections." The intervention, it says, is "profoundly significant".
Labour denials that Jeremy Corbyn's future could be up for discussion as the price of a deal with the SNP or Liberal Democrats are highlighted by The Daily Telegraph. The suggestion was reportedly made by Lord Kerslake, a crossbench peer and former head of the civil service, who the Telegraph describes as a "long standing ally of John McDonnell".
The Daily Mirror leads on what it describes as a "care revolution for pensioners" being announced by the Labour leader. It says he'll unveil a seven-point plan "to restore dignity and respect, after years of Tory cuts".

How to end a dry spell in a relationship – Femina
Posted: November 29, 2019 at 11:42 am
The excitement is always palpable in a new relationship. Right from grooming, to paying attention to your outfit or tiny details for those dinner dates and movie nights, the enthusiasm constantly keeps us on our toes. And while you and your partner are still discovering each others habits and behaviour patterns, the sexual chemistry with a new beau is probably the highlight of the relationship. You look forward to a romp between the sheets, and are never too tired or bored to get into the mood. You think youve aced it, till you fall into a rut, and your partners presence becomes part of your routine. Perhaps other priorities occupy your headspace or life, or you may be too stressed at work, but whatever it is, you start to taper off and sex is no longer a priority. In some cases, the situation worsens until you realise youre not having sex at all!
Dry spells are normal, no doubt. A survey conducted earlier this year by Swedish intimate lifestyle company LELO in the United States, discovered that 28 percent of the population is going through a sex drought. Of this, 31 per cent are not focused on sex, 25 per cent are in long-distance relationships, and 24 per cent have busy work schedules. You might think you are stuck in a mundane relationship, and therefore distance yourself further from your significant other. This is a bigger mistake and will certainly not help the cause. While its not always easy to get back into the game, addressing a few key issues will get you going for sure!
Assess the situationGet to the root of the matter and figure out why you arent having sex. Manjula MK, Chennai-based psychologist and relationships advisor says, The reasons could range from partners being in demanding jobs that require constant travelling, to unaddressed sexual trauma. If the reason is practical and circumstantial, for instance, say youre in a long-distance relationship, then its easier to pinpoint. However, serious causes like sexual incompatibility, feeling a lack of connection with your partner, your own state of mind, etc., are tougher to detect. Assessing this, either with your partner or on your own, is the first step towards understanding and remedying the sex drought.
Be open with communicationIt may not always be pleasant, and depending on the kind of communication you have with your partner, it could also be awkward. However, it takes two to make love, so youre going to have to involve your partner at some level. Jayanti Krishna*, a 28-year-old home entrepreneur from Chennai recalls, My husband and I got married young, and the first couple of years were bliss. However, after the birth of our daughter, who is now three, our priorities completely shifted. We spent more time parenting, and less time with each other. The erratic sleep schedules drained us, and we were unable to eke out time to get intimate. In fact, for almost two years, we didnt have any sex. Soon, Krishna realised that they were drifting apart as a couple, and spoke to her husband. We decided to be practical about it, and now make time for each other, even if it is only thrice a month. We make sure our daughter is safe, either at school or with a grandparent, and take time off work to devote a couple of hours at a stretch to have sex, she says. Discussing your concerns frankly not only helps in resolving issues, but also sets the pace to making you feel closer as a couple.
Focus on quality, not quantityIf youve already going through a dry spell, dont jump back in with the intention of getting to it a few times a day. Instead, focus on spending quality time, even if you need to space it out. Remember, familiarity breeds contempt. So, if youre joined at the hip, you may get fed up and re-enter the sex drought phase, sooner than youd imagine. Santhanam Jagannathan, a Chennai-based sexologist says, Quality sex can ensure that you keep coming back for more. The thumb rule is to take enough time for foreplay, and to ensure both partners are fully aroused. This can make sex satisfying. The use of tools such as lubricants, sex toys and in some cases, even pornography, can be explored. All this takes time and effort, so ensure you work towards fulfilling sex, rather than just frequent sex.
Have realistic expectationsThe initial rush of a romance may or may not return, and its best to be practical when youre trying to end the sex drought in your relationship. Factors like emotions, lifestyle changes, and boredom that have contributed to the dry spell wont just vanish overnight. Ragini Nair*, a 32-year-old secretary in an MNC in Chennai says, My partner and I are compatible but somehow, the sex suddenly started feeling like too much work, because the drive didnt stem as organically as it did. Nair and her partner went without sex for eight months, until they realised that sex didnt have to be as electrifying as it was in the beginning. We would do what was comfortable; some days we would just make out, on other days, we would go down on each other, and on other occasions, we would just lie in bed naked and talk. We do have sex now, not too infrequently, but we have made peace with our expectations.
Try something newOften, the spark is missing simply because the novelty of doing things together fades away. That hot and heavy sex that may have brought you together is not what is going to sustain the relationship, Dr Lisa Bahar, a US-based licensed marriage and family therapist was quoted in an interview in 2013. Now is the time to build intimacy on a deeper level, which requires awareness and a willingness to be curious about your partner in new ways that create spontaneous intimacy. Make it a point to try something new together, so that youre always surprising yourselves. Maria DMello, a Chennai-based relationship counsellor advises, Start a new hobby together, take up dance classes, or even just set time aside twice a week for a romantic movie date. Get back into the groove of things, and start flirting with one another, reliving your romance stage by stage. If time permits, travel as much as you can. If not, steam up the processsexting when he least expects it, or by surprising him with an erotic massage. He is sure to return the favour.
Get into the role Sometimes, a sexual dry spell could be caused by physical triggers. Heres what you need to watch out for:Contraception: Ironically, most contraceptive pills, designed to allow you to enjoy sex without worrying about pregnancies, are the ones that could hamper your sex drive. This is because of the hormonal changes that occur in the body, lowering the androgen content, and hampering your sex drive. If you feel this is the issue, address it with your gynaecologist.Menopause: While in some cases menopause gets your sex drive high, in others it can hamper the process, thanks to vaginal dryness, hot flushes, mood swings, and decrease in estrogen levels. Theres nothing much you can do here, except wait it out. However, if you want to end the sexual dry spell, hormone replacement therapy and lubricants can help.Lifestyle habits: Lack of sleep is directly linked to a decreased libido. People who sleep for less than five hours a night are in danger of a reduced sex drive. While the odd glass of wine is fine, excess alcohol can also impact your sexual routine, as can smoking. The only solution is to turn around your lifestyle habits.
