Integrative Medicine Defined
Integrative medicine, as defined by the American Board of Integrative Medicine (ABOIM) and the Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine, is the practice of medicine that reaffirms the importance of the relationship between practitioner and patient, focuses on the whole person, is informed by evidence, and makes use of all appropriate therapeutic approaches, healthcare professionals, and disciplines to achieve optimal health and healing.
The American Board of Physician Specialties (ABPS) offers integrative medicine certification through the ABOIM. Completion of the physician board certification process indicates that the Diplomate has provenmastery of the experience and knowledge required to practice integrative medicine. It also reflects the physicians commitment to adhere to the ABPS Medical Code of Ethics. The ABPS is the only multi-specialty certifying board in the United States to offer integrative medicine certification.
Andrew Weil, MD, a visionary physician and author, helped establish the field of integrative medicine as a specialty. His ideas about the treatment and care of the whole person integrate scientifically-validated therapies of conventional medicine with select practices derived from areas sometimes considered to be complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). His defining principles of integrative medicine include:
In addition to scientifically sound treatment concepts, the practitioner of integrative medicine espouses the broad concepts of health promotion/illness prevention and healthy living. Practitioners also are expected to exemplify these tenets and to remain open to self-exploration and self-development.
For integrative medicine certificationqualification requirements, contact the ABPS. ABPS is the official certifying body of the American Association of Physician Specialists, Inc.

Massage Therapy
Massage therapy means that a provider will manipulate (handle, rub or feel) your body to try to help it feel better. Massage therapy is done by someone called a massage therapist. Massage is a way to help with:
Massage therapy is called a complementary therapy because it can be used in conjunction with clinical careto help with some conditions. Massage is used as an added treatment with regular medical care, and never in place of medical care.
It is important to eat a variety of nutritious foods to stay strong and healthy. Your health care provider may recommend that you take dietary supplements if you are not getting enough nutrients from the foods that you eat. Dietary supplements can be consumed through tablets, herbs, powders, capsules, drinks and foods. Examples of common dietary supplements include calcium, folate, iron and Vitamins A, B, C, D and E.
Talk to your health care provider before taking a new dietary supplement. Ingesting too much of certain dietary supplements can pose a risk to your health. Your provider will help you decide which supplements to take and how much.
Acupuncture can be used to help treat a wide variety of health conditions, including chronic pain, addiction, migraines, allergies and stress. Providers who perform acupuncture are called acupuncturists. The acupuncturist will ask the patient about health conditions and concerns. The acupuncturist will then partially insert tiny needles into the skin at specific points on the body. The needles are removed before the patient goes home. Acupuncture does not leave any lasting marks on the skin.
Usingmind-body relaxation techniques, learn how to use your thoughts to positively influence some of your bodys physical responses, thereby decreasing stress.
Mind-body relaxation exercises have been shown to:
Examples of mind-body calming exercises could include:
Mind-body relaxation techniques are not a substitute for medical care, but often can complement the clinical care you are receiving.
Our health does not just depend on our genes and family history. If we arent eating the right things or getting the right nutrients this can cause problems, or make health conditions worse. Nutritional medicine focuses on making sure that you are getting the right nutrients to help your body do its best, rather than just prescribing a medicine or procedure.
Here are some of the things that nutritional medicine might offer you:
Doctors of osteopathic medicine believe that structural problems in the spinal column can affect the nerves that radiate out to different organs, causing disease. Using osteopathic manipulative therapy, also known as OMT, your physician will move your muscles and joints using techniques such as stretching, gentle pressure and resistance. These treatments can promote healing, decrease pain and increase overall mobility. OMT is used to treat many medical conditions including:
OMT should not hurt and includes more than 40 different techniques including soft tissue massage, muscle energy work, myofascial release, and osteopathic cranial release (the application of soft pressure to your skull to stimulate healing). Other than individuals with bone cancer, bone or joint infection, osteoporosis or spinal fusion, patients of any age and with almost any health conditions can safely receive OMT.

We strongly believe that integrative medicine is an approach to health that may be beneficial for all patients. Our team consists of specialty-trained integrative medicine physicians and providers, specially chosen for not just their skill, but also their personal desire to help heal our patients and community.
Integrative medicine is a philosophy and practice of how we care for patients and ourselves. Integrative medicine includes:
While integrative medicine has been referred to as the new medicine*, it is in many ways a return to principles of medicine from the time of Hippocrates: a focus on science-based practices while acknowledging the bodys natural healing capacity. By combining conventional Western medicine with time-tested, proven practices from around the world, we expand our care options for a variety of conditions and diseases. By remembering the core principles of healing and the need to care for the whole patient, we can better relieve suffering.
The Osher Center for Integrative Medicinewas founded in 1997 as Northwestern Memorial Hospital's official integrative medicine program. Since then our clinical program has grown to see thousands of patients every month; our research team investigates the benefits and mechanisms of how integrative medicine works; and we are the trusted "go-to" resource on integrative medicine for the Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern Medicine and the Chicago-area community. We are proud to be recognized* by The Bravewell Collaborative as one of the leading integrative medicine centers in the country.
In April 2014, our program was named the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine in recognition of a generous gift from Bernard Osher*. With this gift, our Center joined a family of integrative medicine centersall affiliated with esteemed teaching hospitals and universities. In addition to our Center at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, additional Osher Centers are available at the following locations.
Our vision for the future of individual care and ultimately, our healthcare system revolves around introducing new integrative care models into the mainstream. The Osher collaborative is working together to create innovative clinical models of care, advance medical education, and collaborate on research initiatives. We are dedicated to taking a leadership role alongside the four other Osher Centers for Integrative Medicine to make our mark on academic medicine, community outreach and public policy.
The Northwestern Medicine Osher Center for Integrative Medicine team invites you to experience a unique healing experience. We are dedicated to being your partner in achieving your goals.

The Marino Center for Integrative Health – Cambridge – Mount …
Posted: March 9, 2019 at 6:49 am
At the Marino Center for Integrative Health, we're honored that you have put your trust in us to deliver the best in comprehensive healthcare services. Here, we offer a unique, integrative model of healthcare, featuring both conventional primary care and a full array of complementary services - conveniently brought together under one roof - to promote your health and the pursuit of a healthy lifestyle.
Integrative Health - its in our name, but you may be wondering exactly what it means. Well, for us at the Marino Center, Integrative Health, or Integrative Medicine, means a unique model of healthcare focused on treatingyou as anindividual, not the disease. Here we aim to restore the focus on health and healing through a strong patient/practitioner relationship. For us, it also means taking more time to understand you and your needs, making sureyou feel listened to, and building an individualized plan for living better and staying better.
With a broader approach to healing and wellness, Integrative Medicine takes into account all aspects of what makes a person whole - mind body and spirit and addresses them all at the same time. Through an active practitioner and patient partnership, a treatment plan including the use of both traditional (sometimes also referred to as conventional or western medicine) and alternative (also called CAM and complementary) therapies is developed to promote health AND prevent illness and disease.
Relying on the best of scientifically-validated conventional and alternative therapies, Integrative Medicine is a practical strategy that puts the whole patient at the center of care. In addition to physical symptoms, it examines the psychological, social and spiritual nature of the individual. An integrative approach educates and empowers the patient to play an active and responsible role in his or her own health.
Our mission is to integrate scientifically and empirically demonstrated conventional and complementary healing traditions to improve the health of those we serve and to extend our knowledge to others through health education, training, and research.
Patient Care
Providing healthcare services through a collaborative team of compassionate, innovative practitioners who provide preventive health care, and work with patients with acute and chronic conditions
Education and Training
Providing each person seeking our services with scientific explanations and informed choices regarding the professional care and self-care of body, mind, and spirit
Sponsoring and participating in public and professional presentations, seminars, and symposia along with publications and other media to educate the general public, medical, and insurance institutions about the unique potential of integrative medicine
Educating medical students through clinical rotations, internships, residencies, and fellowships
Research
Examining the applied clinical aspects of integrating complementary and alternative therapies to determine efficacy and safety
Participating in research studies on specific medical practices and our integrative model with leading research institutions
Performing critical analyses of the service delivery system and examine the clinical and administrative structure of integrative medicine
Lelio 'Les' Marino was the visionary, founder and generous benefactor of what was then known as the Marino Foundation for Integrative Medicine, the sponsor of The Marino Centers for Progressive Health. Because of his vision and generosity, the Center has grown into one of the region's premier providers of integrative medicine and healthcare services.
Our origins date back to 1993 when Mr. Marino acquired a small alternative medical practice in Cambridge, MA. From this humble beginning, he envisioned a model of care that would integrate mind, body, and spirit, and genuinely blend traditional and complementary healing practices. In 2008, we integrated our two names and became the Marino Center for Integrative Health. Throughout the years, the Marino Center has been guided by Mr. Marino's vision and its mission of providing patient care, education, and research - and continues to be today.
After a decade operating centers in Cambridge and Wellesley, in 2013, the Marino Foundation for Integrative Medicine decided to turn its focus to supporting new initiatives in Integrative Medicine, and the Cambridge Marino Center for Integrative Health was acquired by Mount Auburn Hospital, a Harvard-affiliated teaching hospital with a long history of support for integrative, alternative and prevention-based medical approaches.

Faithfully Guided Health Center – Integrative Medicine …
Posted: March 8, 2019 at 6:41 am
Faithfully Guided Health Center takes an integrative and functional approach to primary care. Our priority is to spend the time necessary to uncover the root cause of your disease process vs. only treating the symptoms. Often times in medicine, practitioners provide symptom-management through medication, but fail to guide the patient to full healing and/or improved overall health and well-being.
Faithfully Guided Health Centers providers first spend time talking with and listening to you. We then perform an in-depth history, physical exam and diagnostic tests as needed. Our strategy is not to compartmentalize the body systems but identify how symptoms may be interrelated. We place a significant focus on gut and brain health as we believe this greatly influences the rest of the body.
Our treatment approach relies heavily on lifestyle medicine. We identify changes that can be made to improve nutrition, movement/exercise, restorative sleep/rest, environmental toxin exposure, and stress management. Along with the support of counselors and health coaches, we empower you to be involved with your own healing. Supplementation, medication, referrals to specialists and other treatment modalities will be recommended when needed.
Faithfully Guided Health Centers primary goal is to provide healing by connecting spirit, mind, and body through a collaborative approach to healthcare.
Helping the community achieve optimal health and abundant life is our vision! By providing faith-based lifestyle healthcare, we desire to be a part of the solution by improving the health outcomes of Marion County, from 46 out 62, and becoming one of the healthiest communities to live in Florida.
Faithfully Guided Health Center proudly offers free and on-going educational sessions for community members, groups and organizations throughout the Ocala, Florida and Marion County area.
