At JBT, we are committed to an integrative approach that supports all aspects of your health and wellness, including mental, emotional, physical, social, spiritual, intellectual, environmental, and other components. We have a staff of psychologists and a psychiatrist who work closely with our primary care group, and one of our primary care providers has completed the University of Arizona's Integrative Medicine Fellowship. We also offer acupuncture and (coming soon!) massage services, mindfulness classes, and are growing our other wellness offerings.

Integrative medicine is the practice of medicine, informed by evidence, which takes account of the whole person. It addresses physical, emotional, mental, social, and environmental influences on health and makes use of all appropriate therapies and disciplines to achieve optimal health.

Acupuncture is an important component of Traditional Chinese Medicine that continues to be a topic of modern clinical research and practice. It involves the insertion of extremely thin, sterile needles at specific points along the body. In the United States, acupuncture has most commonly been used in the treatment of various kinds of musculoskeletal pain. Both the National Institute of Health and the World Health Organization recommend the use of acupuncture for many conditions.

At JBT, acupuncture services are available to help you manage stress, anxiety, depression, insomnia, pain, digestive disorders, headaches, gynecological concerns, and many other health issues. Our acupuncture services are integrated into our primary care department so that each patient receives the best of both Allopathic/Western Medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine. We welcome you to come and see how you can make acupuncture an important part of your healthy lifestyle.

How to schedule: A referral is needed from a JBT primary care or behavioral health provider. If you are already an established patient with JBT you can call or MyChart your clinician with a referral request. If you are not established, call JBT to schedule an office visit with one of our primary care clinicians.

Cost:Freewith the Pacific Source Student Health Insurance Plan. If you have outside insurance, you have two options: 1) We can bill your insurance, which may or may not cover all or part of your visit. You would be responsible for any copays or deductibles. When a JBT provider makes an acupuncture referral, it is processed through managed care to determine if your insurance covers acupuncture. OR, 2) You can opt to self-pay at the discounted rate of $35 per visit.

We offeravarietyofmindfulness and meditation workshops and series to introduce these topicsaswellasexplore them in-depth.

We all know how to take our bodies on a vacation, but do we know how to give our minds a break? The essence of meditation is relaxation. In the workshops, we will practice how to unwind and letour minds settle into a relaxed but focused state. Each session will focus on simple and easy techniques to calm the mind and relax the body. The pressures of school and work can seem overwhelming, but learning how to relax in a mindful way can help us let go of the stress and work more effectively in our daily lives.

When: Look on ourhomepage for current drop-in sessions.

Whether you are managing the side effects of a chronic condition, seeking pain relief or just looking for ways to enhance your healthy lifestyle, our Integrative Medicine & Health providers will work with you to select the classes and therapy sessions that are right for you. The services we offer are:

Registered therapy animals and their handlers work together to integrate animal interactions into health, education and human services for the purpose of therapeutic improvements and enriched health and wellness.

Often used in combination with massage and other therapeutic techniques as part of an integrative treatment approach, aromatherapy is the therapeutic use of plant-derived, aromatic essential oils to promote physical and psychological well-being.

Art therapy uses the creative process of making art to improve a persons physical, mental and emotional health. Under the direction of a licensed art therapist, art expression is a non-verbal way to communicate thoughts, feelings, experiences and imagination, resulting in reduced stress, pain relief and personal insight.

Jin Shin Jyutsu uses the power of light touch on the body through clothing to assist with pain, stress, nausea, and other physical and emotional side effects of chronic conditions and illness.

Massage therapy is the manual manipulation of soft body tissues to enhance health and well-being. Massage sessions include therapeutic, relaxation, prenatal and oncology massages, which are tailored to meet patients individual needs.

Guided meditation can help reduce stress, support immune health, increase happiness, improve productivity and calm the mind.

Music therapy is the evidence-based use of music interventions to address the physical, emotional, cognitive, social and spiritual needs of patients of all ages. A music therapy session with a board-certified music therapist may include patient-preferred music, lyric analysis, instrument playing, singing, songwriting, or music and imagery.

Narrative medicine sessions encourage patients to rediscover personal identity and meaning by telling or writing their stories. Patients are invited to share their life experiences, sources of strength, new insights or perspectives during illness or treatment, and hopes for the future.

Regardless of faith or religious affiliation, pastoral care is available to patients, family and staff at all times to help deal with the spiritual and emotional challenges associated with medical events and crises.

Reiki is a non-invasive Japanese healing practice that involves the placement of hands above or gently on the body, using life-force energy to facilitate relaxation and stress reduction and to promote healing.

Often called moving meditation, tai chi is a Chinese martial art that combines a variety of slow, gentle movements, standing postures and deep breathing to focus the bodys energy and align mind, body and spirit.

Yoga is an effective mind-body practice incorporating gentle movement, breathing and deep relaxation techniques to reduce stress, pain and fatigue. These techniques also promote positive physical, mental and emotional changes. Yoga classes are suitable for all skill levels.

Alternative Medicine for Cancer – Integrative Medicine | MD …

Posted: August 16, 2018 at 7:40 pm

The terms complementary, alternative and integrative medicine are often used interchangeably. However, they are not the same, and each field is a distinctive approach to the treatment of disease. The following terms explain the differences between these medical fields.

Conventional medicine is the "traditional" medicine as practiced by a medical doctor (M.D.), a doctor of osteopathy (D.O.) and other allied health professionals.

Alternative medicine is used in place of, or instead of, conventional medicine. Many alternative therapies and drugs do not have scientific evidence to back up their claims of effectiveness. Some have no therapeutic benefits at all or can even be dangerous.

Complementary medicine is a group of mostly non-medical approaches to help patients cope with cancer and treatment side effects, pain, depression and anxiety.Research data has verified the benefits of many complementary therapies, including acupuncture, yoga, massage, stress reduction techniques and nutritional supplements.

Integrative medicine is the practice of combining scientifically proven complementary therapies with conventional medicine as part of a comprehensive plan to treat both the disease and its physical and emotional side effects.

Many cancer patients find relief from complementary therapies, while others have found them to be ineffective or have reported problems.Although some complementary therapies are useful for cancer patients, others may be harmful in certain situations.

We strongly encourage you to consult with your oncologist before trying any complementary therapies. It also is important to inform them about any therapies you currently use that may affect your cancer treatment.

MD Andersons Integrative Medicine Center offers many complementary therapies for cancer patients that have been shown to be safe and effective.

Welcome to Southeastern Integrative Health and WellnessWhere you are not just a set of symptoms

Dr. Matthew Strickland is the founder of Southeastern Integrative Health and Wellness, an integrative health clinic that specializes in science-based holistic medicine. As a naturopathic doctor, Dr. Strickland is a leader in integrative and functional medicine.

His personal philosophy is simple to do what it takes to get the patient well. Not bound by dogma, and well-informed both in the scientific and natural side of medicine, he will work to understand your unique health concerns and how they present in you.

Clues often come from your family history, work history, medications youve taken, past illnesses, stressors, foods youre eating, and more. Well go over all those things.

Your first visit will always be long enough that you will have enough time to ask questions and Ill have enough time to listen and really dig deep into what is causing your health concern.

It takes a doctor that has the time, training, and experience, to discover the root cause of your illness.

Once Ive gotten all the information I need, and sometimes this takes ordering labwork or going over your case outside of your appointment time, youll be given a comprehensive treatment plan. This may include: vitamin and nutrient therapies (supplements), herbal medicine, homeopathy, dietary recommendations and changes, mind-body medicine, counseling, biofeedback, and more. As a licensed naturopathic doctor, Im also well-educated in pharmaceuticals and it may be that those are the best option for you. Im not dogmatic and its important that my patients are healthy and safely taken care of. In some cases pharmaceuticals are the best option, especially before the more natural approaches begin to work.

I have successfully helped people with many conditions ranging from Migraines to Depression to Autoimmune disease and more. For more information click on what conditions we treat click on services or reach out to me through our contact form.
