The first step is for you to educate yourself by reading most of this website. Ideally, study everything this website has to offer and only then phone to request a preliminary phone meeting with a physician. A doctor will discuss your situation with you over the phone and answer your initial questions. Not everyone is a candidate. If you are still a candidate after that preliminary phone conference, a formal evaluation visit is scheduled.
Your face to face initial evaluation may require one and a half to two hours of discussion, physical examination, ultrasound imaging, education, and more discussion. A precise list is made of what spots in what structures in your joint need refurbishing. That is explained to you and usually shown to you. If you continue to be a candidate at that point, somewhere around 6 once monthly procedures are usually recommended. All your questions are discussed. If you and the physician are satisfied with this plan, a first procedure is scheduled. Some nutritional supplements are usually prescribed. Certain medicines are prohibited. Instructions are given.
At each monthly procedure, your blood is drawn. Key nutrients are infused back into the same vein via IV. Then you have a snack while your blood is processed in our lab to create a concentrate of your platelets and stem cells. This super cell concentrate is mixed with a specialized local anesthetic. Sometimes additional nerve blocks may be performed. Ultrasound imaging is used by the doctor to see the tiny injection needle inside your body and place the super cell mixture exactly within tears or wear sites in each damaged, degenerated ligament, tendon, and meniscus. It usually takes about 2 to 2.5 hours. You walk out of there, go about your day, and probably feel some soreness that evening and the next day. After 2-3 days of only limited exercise, most people can return to whatever activity and exercise they tolerate.
You grow your own. Thats right, for 3-4 weeks, youll grow your own brand new, teen age repair tissue at the sites where injury and degeneration have aged your joint. The regrowth in any one months crop is partial, so monthly repetition for around 6 months is normally necessary. Usually, you start to feel the difference only late in those months, as new tissue accumulates enough to replace tears and areas of degeneration, gradually stabilizing the joint. As you start to feel better, and your physician sees objective improvement with exam or sonographic imaging, you will likely be instructed to become more active, possibly with referral to physical therapists or other outside experts. Strengthening surrounding muscles in that way will eventually complete the process.

The two companies successfully treated their first congestive heart failure patient at the new clinical site last week, using Biohearts AdipoCell (adipose derived stem cells).
The therapy involved the use of stem cells derived from the patients own fat (adipose tissue) obtained using liposuction. The recovered stem cells were injected into the patients heart with Biohearts MyoCath needle injection catheter which allows for introduction of the cells directly into the heart without invasive surgery.
Rafael Moguel, M.D., Head of the Cardiac Program at the Centro Medico de Cozumel, was the treating interventional cardiologist for the Bioheart therapy procedure.
"Our center is very excited to participate in the cutting edge programs at Bioheart," Moguel says. "We can offer new hope to patients suffering from debilitating diseases by utilizing regenerative medicine, and delivering them non-invasively into the heart."
The MyoCath catheter was introduced using a radial artery approach, the first such documented stem cell case using this delivery method. The benefit of a radial artery approach is that it does not require the patient to lie flat for up to six hours, as in a femoral artery approach. Patients are able to sit up, walk and eat immediately following the procedure, and the risk of internal bleeding is eliminated.
Bioheart and Global Stem Cells Group have designed several different protocols to be utilized at the center in Cozumel, offering treatments to patients for a variety of different indications.

New Mexico (Stem Cell) – what-when-how

On July 18, 2006, the U.S. Senate convened to vote on a proposed bill (H.R. 810) that would amend the Public Health Service Act and provide federal funding for research on human embryonic stem cells. This bill was passed by the Senate but was later vetoed by President George W. Bush. In the vote, the two New Mexico Senators voted against each other: Democrat Jeff Bingaman was in favor of the bill and Republican Pete Domenici opposed it.
Also in 2006, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson proposed a budget of $10 million of state funds to be dedicated to supporting stem cell research. The money would build a new research center at the Health Sciences Center of the University of New Mexico campus at Albuquerque (with an allocated $4 million), as well as hire research faculty (using another $4 million) and train graduate students for future careers in stem cell research (with the remaining $2 million). The purpose of using state funds to build the research center as well as to support faculty and students is to circumvent the federal law prohibiting stem cell research with federal funds. States, however, are free to choose their own stances on stem cell research. Governor Richardson was approached by New Mexicos Roman Catholic Bishops, who urged him to reconsider his proposal to use embryonic stem cells.
In January 2008, the U.S. Senate again passed a bill in favor of allowing federal funds to support stem cell research while forbidding human cloning. This bill, 2008 Senate Bill 23, or the Biomedi-cal Research Act, was sponsored by New Mexico Senator John C. Ryan and was supported by Governor Bill Richardson.
At present, within the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center (UNM HSC), there is a graduate training program in development and stem cell biology. Stem cell-related research focuses on embryonic stem cells in terms of their cell cycle and its regulation and how these regulatory schemes are related to those schemes of cancer cells, as well as neural stem cells and the harnessing of such cells to treat disorders such as Parkinsons disease, Alzheimers disease, and numerous other degenerative disorders. In addition, neural stem cells could be used to treat spinal cord injury patients, and further understanding of these stem cells could shed light on the molecular biology of brain tumors.
Another focus of the research at UNM HSC is on adult human renal stem cells. These cells can be harvested from the adult kidney and studied. Such investigations might lead to customized treatment of chronic kidney failure or other renal diseases. Scientists at UNM HSC also study human blood and bone marrow stem cells.
Another university in New Mexico, the New Mexico State University (NMSU), also recognizes the importance of stem cell research. Although little research that is directly related to stem cells is carried out at NMSU, scientists there are encouraged to stay abreast of the biological science regarding stem cells. In fact, the main Web page of the office of the vice president for research highlights stem cell research breakthroughs in its Global Research News Section. Smaller universities such as the Eastern University of New Mexico and the Western
University of New Mexico do not have the facilities to conduct stem cell research, yet they keep their students and faculty informed through classes and seminars that address stem cell biology.

Orlando family impacted by ALS asks for support

ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) - An Orlando family impacted by ALS is spreading awareness about the need, not only for research, but also assistance to families impacted by the incurable disease today who are being bankrupted by it.
"We tried to do it all by ourselves until we realized that the atrophy and the muscles were just deteriorating. What do we do now? Are we just going to sit back, and get busy dying? We're getting busy living," said Walter Briggs, a former NFL quarterback who dabbled in acting.
He is now a full-time caregiver for his wife, Debra. She was diagnosed with ALS, or Lou Gehrig's Disease, in September of 2012. Shortly thereafter, she left her position as a family case manager.
"It takes a lot out of her every day, every night to just survive," said Walter.
Debra founded Debra's Journey for Life Foundation, Inc. in December of 2013 with her husband.
"At the stage that I am, a lot of people are not even talking. A lot of people are on feeding tubes," said Debra.
So, she and her husband, who has since reached out to friends in football and acting, have been using their voices to spread awareness about the physical, emotional and financial impact of the debilitating, neurodegenerative disease.
"If I can be a voice to someone else's mother, father, sister, or brother that has Lou Gehrig's Disease, Debra's Journey For Life Foundation is going to lift them up, and let them know there is a source of help," said Walter.
"There is no selfishness to Debra at all. It involves her, but it's bigger than her," said Steve Pisarkiewicz, Debra's Journey For Life Foundation Board Chairman, who is also a former NFL player and leader of the local NFL player's association.
"The clock is running. Lets go," said Steve, about the couple's desire for public support so that they may travel abroad for a stem cell treatment. He also claims it is time to invest in finding treatments and a cure through research which is a top priority of the ALS Association that is behind last summer's ice bucket challenge.

Collaborating with scientists from New York, Toronto, and Tokyo, Harvard Stem Cell Institute (HSCI) researchers have devised two methods for using stem cells to generate the type of neurons that help regulate behavioral and basic physiological functions in the human body, such as obesity and hypertension, as well as sleep, mood, and some social disorders.
The work by Florian Merkle, Kevin Eggan, Alex Schier, and colleagues provides researchers, for the first time, with live hypothalamic neurons to use as targets for drug discovery and therapeutic cell-transplantation efforts for conditions related to stress, reproduction, puberty, and immune function, as hypothalamic neurons are often involved in those diseases as well.
Not only is this exciting because of the science involved, said Merkle, a postdoctoral fellow in the lab of HSCI principal faculty member Kevin Eggan, who pioneered disease in a dish technology, but by being able to produce this one type of neuron we bring possible treatments for a wide range of conditions closer to the clinic.
The hypothalamus is an ancient structure of the brain, said Merkle. Its very conserved, and thats because it plays such a basic function. Though it makes up only about 0.3 percent of the adult human brain, the hypothalamus serves as a regulator for numerous basic physiological functions.
Thus far, research exploring the origin or process of hypothalamic dysfunction has been limited because researchers havent been able to observe live hypothalamic cells.
Merkle and a team of scientists from HSCI, New Yorks Sloan Kettering Institute for Cancer Research, Torontos Hospital for Sick Children, and Japans RIKEN developed the two neuron-generating methods, self-patterning and directed differentiation, concurrently.
The new work has been published in the journal Development.
In his self-patterning approach, Merkle put 5,000 stem cells in a dish amid an environment conducive to survival and left them alone. Within a day, the cells would aggregate and communicate with each other to plan which stem cells would differentiate into which neural progenitors. The aggregate eventually differentiated into cells that, together, made a tissue-like structure similar to the hypothalamus.
When asked how the two processes differed, Merkle said that during directed differentiation the researchers are pushing [stem] cells very strongly, guiding them toward a particular fate, and not relying on them to do it themselves. Merkle used small molecules to steer stem cell differentiation down a specific pathway.
I think that there is definitely more opportunity to explore and refine directed differentiation to make different regions within the hypothalamus, said Merkle.

Gordie Howes health improved dramatically after stem cell treatment

CALGARY They call it the miracle of stem cells and it was nothing less than a miracle says Marty Howe about his dad Gordies recovery.
Ata press conference Tuesday in Calgary for the Gordie Howe C.A.R.E.S annual hockey Pro-AM, Marty Howe talked about how the stem cell treatment saved Gordie Howes life after suffering two strokes.
He probably had a month to live the way he was going, he was deteriorating pretty fast. To have him now back and be able to relate to everybody really helps, Marty Howe said.
The Howe family remains positive and believes Gordie might be able to travel again and attend events soon. Marty Howe said his dad is already planning to attend an event in Saskatoon next month.
He can walk, hes got a sense of freedom now. He can play with the grand kids. He still needs to work with his speech, he cant sign yet but hopefully in the future he will be able to, Howe said.
Its a joy to have him with us still. Its nothing more of a gift. Hes down in Texas with my sister and we have caregivers that have been coming in for the past two and a half years too.
Gordie Howe has aform of dementia and the 86-year-old suffered hismost recent stroke just before Christmas last year due to dehydration.
A group of doctors, who happened to be named Howe, contacted the family and told them about a stem cell treatment they could offer for Gordie Howe. So the family went down to Mexico to give it a try.
Gordies health improved dramatically. Soon after, hewas able to walk and speak again. The family says Gordie plans to do asecond treatment in two months.
Known as Mr. Hockey, Howe was the NHLs Most Valuable Player six times. He played on four Stanley Cup championship teams in Detroit during a 25-year stint that began in 1946. The league scoring records he set stood until Wayne Gretzky broke them.
