Diabetes: Spotlight on Stem Cell Research – Peter Butler

(Part 2 of 4) Peter Butler, MD spoke at the Spotlight on Juvenile Diabetes, an educational event presented at the CIRM Governing Board meeting on September 25, 2008. Butler summarized normal glucose metabolism, explained how loss of pancreatic beta islet cells leads to diabetes, and presented evidence for beta cell regeneration in adults. Butler is the Director of the Larry Hillblom Islet Research Center at the University of California, Los Angeles

Shankle reviewed clinical data, which indicates that stem cells from the fat pad of the intestines have the capacity to repair damaged brain tissue found in Alzheimer's disease and other neurological disorders

Spotlight on Basic Stem Cell Research – Irv Weissman

(Part 2 of 3) Irv Weissman, Ph.D., spoke at the "Spotlight on Basic Research," an educational event presented at the CIRM Governing Board meeting on August 20, 2009. Irv Weissman described how his lab's basic research of the immune system led to the identification of blood-forming stem cells and new therapeutic strategies to treat various blood diseases. He has a CIRM Disease Team grant to develop therapeutic antibodies for targeting human acute myeloid leukemia stem cells.

John Zaia, MD, spoke at the "Spotlight on Disease Team Awards: HIV/AIDS," an educational event presented at the CIRM Governing Board meeting on April 29, 2010. Zaia is the chairman in department of virology and he holds the Aaron D. and Edith Miller Chair for Gene Therapy at the Beckman Research Institute at the City of Hope.
