Faces of UVic Research: Leigh Anne Swayne
Dr. Leigh Anne Swayne is a neuroscientist and a professor at the University of Victoria. Her research focus is to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying the birth of new neurons. Her work will contribute to our knowledge of the bioelectric control of neural stem cells, and, in the long-term, may assist in the evaluation of specific ion channels as targets to promote brain repair. In this video, she discusses neural stem cells and ion channels in the brain and their potential in brain repair after damage, such as a stroke. Fast Facts: Understudy gene can be a lifesaver
Understudy gene can be a lifesaver From man-made stem cells to future medicine Spinal muscular atrophy is a neuro-muscular disease that causes the nerve cells that control your muscles to die. Niels Geijsen and his group turn patient skin cells into stem cells. From these stem cells they can grow nerve cells in the lab. They use these man-made nerve cells to find the cause of this disease. Making Stem Cell Thearpy Safer - Mayo Clinic
Mayo Clinic researchers have found a way to detect and eliminate potentially troublemaking stem cells to make stem cell therapy safer. Induced Pluripotent Stem cells, also known as iPS cells, are bioengineered from adult tissues to have properties of embryonic stem cells, which have the unlimited capacity to differentiate and grow into any desired types of cells, such as skin, brain, lung and heart cells. Study Author, Dr. Timothy Nelson provides and overview.From:mayoclinicViews:46 0ratingsTime:02:04More inScience Technology
