Calculate Your Dog’s Age With This New, Improved Formula – Smithsonian.com

Posted: November 20, 2019 at 1:50 pm

One dog year is not equivalent to seven human years, despite widespread use of the ratio for calculating the age of canine companions. Presumably, the ratio is based on the average lifespan of dogs being 10 years and humans being 70 years, its not quite so simple. The formula is not based on any real science and it was debunked by veterinarians years ago.

But geneticists digging into the mysteries of aging have developed a new calculation to understand how our canine companions' ages correspond to our own.

Calculate

(*Only enter numbers greater than zero)

Your dog's age in human years is:

To understand how dogs age, the team looked at a phenomenon called DNA methylation. As mammals get older, their DNA picks up methyl groups that "stick" to their DNA. While these groups dont change the DNA itself, they attach to the genetic molecule and can turn certain genes on or off, which is an important part of epigenetics, or the way environmental factors cause certain genes to express themselves.

Methlyation occurs at a relatively steady rate as humans age, which allows researchers to estimate a person's age, a process theyve dubbed the epigenetic clock.

In the new paper on dog years, which has yet to be peer reviewed and is currently posted on the preprint server bioRxiv, a team led by Tina Wang of the University of California, San Diego, compared the epigenetic clocks in people to canines to better understand the genes associated with aging. They picked dogs because most live in the same environments as humans and also receive some degree of medical care, like humans do.

The team looked at methylation rates in 104 Labrador retrievers between the ages of four weeks and 16 years old, reports Michelle Starr at Science Alert. They then compared them to published methylation profiles of 320 humans from age one to 103. (They also compared both to 133 mice methylation profiles.)

It turns out some parts of a dogs life follows the same pattern as humans, though other longevity milestones dont link up quite as nicely. For instance, the methylation rate showed a seven-week-old pup corresponds to a 9-month-old human baby, and both species begin to get their first teeth at this time.

But the comparison breaks down after early puppyhood. The dog clock ticks much faster with pups speeding through puberty and reaching sexual maturity within their first year. Then, the dog's epigenetic clock slows down as the dog ages, and begins to match up with humans again in its later years.

Overall, the average 12-year lifespan of a Labrador lined up with the average worldwide lifespan of humans, which is about 70 years.

While the study complicates the concept of dog years, it does show that the animals experience similar methylation processes as humans.

We already knew that dogs get the same diseases and functional declines of aging that humans do, and this work provides evidence that similar molecular changes are also occurring during aging, Matt Kaeberlein, a biogerontologist at the University of Washington who was not involved in the study, tells Virginia Morell at Science. Its a beautiful demonstration of the conserved features of the epigenetic age clocks shared by dogs and humans.

The new formula for a dogs ages based on the study requires a little more math than multiplying by seven. You multiply the natural logarithm of a dog's age by 16, then add 31 [human_age = 16ln(dog_age) + 31].

According to the formula, a 2-year-old dog is the equivalent of a 42-year-old human, but things slow down after that. A 5-year-old dog is the equivalent of a 56.75 year old human, and a 10-year-old dog is the equivalent of 67.8-year-old person.

Evolutionary biologist Steve Austad of the University of Alabama in Birmingham, who was not involved in the study, tells Morell that hes not too surprised that the epigenetic clock applies to dogs, too. He says that by studying different dog breeds with different lifespans the researchers may find some interesting results.

This formula is not the last word on dog years, however, especially since it only looked at one breed. Erika Mansourian, writing for the American Kennel Club, reports that the American Veterinary Medical Association says the accurate way to calculate dog years for a medium-sized dog is to assume the first year is equivalent to 15 years and age two adds another nine years. After that, each year of a dogs life is equivalent to five human years. It doesn't perfectly line up with the new formula, but both acknowledge that dogs age rapidly in their first years of life.

Whatever the case, dogs lives are all too short. That may be why people are excited about a project by the Dog Aging Project, which is currently recruiting 10,000 pets and their owners to participate in a new study that will look at the dogs' health, gut microbes, diet and exercise to understand aging. And 500 lucky dogs will test out a new drug that may help slow the aging process, which could help us someday, too.

Reprogramming ant ‘soldiers’ – Penn: Office of University Communications

Posted: November 20, 2019 at 1:50 pm

Through early adulthood, exposure to new experienceslike learning to drive a car or memorizing information for an examtriggers change in the human brain, re-wiring neural pathways to imprint memories and modify behavior. Similar to humans, the behavior of Florida carpenter ants is not set in stonetheir roles, whether it is protecting the colony or foraging for food, are determined by signals from the physical and social environment early in their life. But questions remain about how long they are vulnerable to epigenetic changes and what pathways govern social behavior in ants.

Now, a team led by researchers in thePerelman School of Medicine discovered that a protein called CoREST, a neural repressor that is also found in humans, plays a central role in determining the social behavior of ants. The results, published inMolecular Cell, also revealed that worker ants called Majors, known as brawny soldiers that protect colonies, can be reprogrammed to perform the foraging rolegenerally reserved for their sisters, the Minor antsup to five days after they emerge as an adult ant. However, the reprogramming is ineffective at the 10-day mark, revealing how narrow the window of epigenetic plasticity is in ants.

How behavior becomes established in humans is deeply fascinatingwe know its quite plastic especially during childhood and early adolescencehowever, of course, we cannot study or manipulate this experimentally, saysthe studys senior authorShelley Berger, the Daniel S. Och University Professor in the departments of Cell and Developmental Biology and Biology, and director of the Penn Epigenetics Institute. Ants, with their complex societies and behavior, and similar plasticity, provide a wonderful laboratory model to understand the underlying mechanisms and pathways."

Student Health Services offers preventative medical care for Aggies traveling abroad – Texas A&M The Battalion

Posted: November 20, 2019 at 1:45 pm

Texas A&M Student Health Services offers preventive care to keep traveling students safe from overseas illness, while protecting their classmates from any infectious diseases they could bring back from abroad.

Preventive medicine can immunize a student from a certain disease or infection, and SHS can also provide screenings, examinations and blood work. But it is not only important for students going abroad to keep themselves safe and healthy. Taking these steps can also protect the A&M community at large from any possible diseases that may have been caught overseas and could be brought back to campus.

Claire Kolb, a physician assistant at Beutel Health Center, said SHSs goal is for students to stay well and do well, and preventive medicine does much to keep the campus community safe.

[It] helps to support that mission and increase screening and prevention of disease to keep our students and community healthy, Kolb said. We are able to do that through screening for communicable diseases, providing vaccinations, travel medicine and allergy [immunotherapy] injections.

Holly Hudson, executive director of Education Abroad, said it is not up to the students or the university whether they get any immunizations when studying abroad.

If the [Centers for Disease Control] requires those immunizations, then students actually have to get those in order to obtain a visa or entry into the country where they want to study, Hudson said. In any case where immunizations are required, it is not optional.

For those who study abroad, Hudson said they will be provided with a form of health insurance to be used should they get sick, injured or in any way hurt.

We enroll all our students who are studying abroad in international health insurance, Hudson said. Students are enrolled in insurance that will treat any sort of emergency situation they may have in regards to health. It will cover any medical expenses while abroad and will pay for them to come home should they require additional medical care.

Despite many students going overseas for an extended period of time, Hudson said it is not often that students get severely sick while studying abroad.

Usually, we see injuries the same way that wed see here, like a broken leg, falling or just in the wrong place at the wrong time, Hudson said. Any operational issues we may see, such as a kidney or respiratory infection, are generally treatable wherever they are. Its very rare for a student to get very sick abroad and need to return home as a result of that.

On top of medications and screenings provided for students, Kolb said there are numerous other well-being efforts students can engage in.

[Student Health Services] provides immunizations as needed, Kolb said. We also provide free STI screening at our monthly STI events. We work with our integrated behavioral health providers to assist patients with mental health awareness.

There are also other general health campaigns that SHS holds, Kolb said, which are generally inexpensive and easy to access.

We have a free flu shot campaign in early October to prevent an influenza epidemic on campus, Kolb said. Our immunizations are covered for all students with the TAMU student health insurance, and we offer low cost payment options as well.

Chronic Inflammation Is a Huge Problem. But This Specialized CBD for Inflammation Can Help. – Futurism

Posted: November 20, 2019 at 1:45 pm

Inflammation has become one of the biggest buzzwords in health and wellness circles in recent years. And while all the fuss over inflammation it may seem like yet another fad promulgated by television quacks and bloggers, its really not. Many health professionals now believe that understanding and controlling chronic inflammation is the future of preventative medicine. Thats why Mellowment CBD has specifically developed a specific type of CBD for inflammation. Its called Mellowment High Impact for Inflammation, and it combines CBD and curcumin for maximum inflammation relief, recovery, and comfort.

Inflammation is an essential survival mechanism of the human immune system. As such, its usually a good thing, a sign that the body is working to heal an injury or fight off some pathogen or disease. When cells are in distress, they release chemicals that alerts the immune system. The immune system in turn sends inflammatory cells to capture the pathogens or heal damaged tissues. Meanwhile, blood vessels in the area expand to accommodate the additional immune system traffic and bring fluid to the site of the injury or infection. This is called acute inflammation. And while it is painful and uncomfortable, its also necessary.

Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, sometimes this natural immune system response does not get switched off. Sometimes its because the cause of the initial immune system response cannot be eliminated. Sometimes the immune system simply malfunctions. Either way, the immune system tells white blood cells to attack healthy tissues and organs, resulting in chronic inflammation.

While all adults experience some level of chronic inflammation that slowly wears down our organs and tissues, in some people this chronic inflammation is more extreme. And what scientists have finally realized is that this excessive chronic inflammation causes major damage that contributes to many of the most common degenerative diseases, including coronary artery disease, diabetes, cancer, and Alzheimers.

The good news? Numerous studies suggest that treating chronic inflammation can significantly reduce the risk for these diseases.

That brings us to Mellowment High Impact CBD for Inflammation.

Mellowment has become one of the leading names in CBD over the last few years thanks to their exacting scientific methods and rigorous quality control. With High Impact for Inflammation, theyve combined their proprietary CBD formula with and curcumin, a compound found in the spice turmeric that has been used as an herbal medicine in India for thousands of years.

CBD has long been observed to have anti-inflammatory effects. Now were finally starting to understand why. According to one study, for example, CBD reduces inflammation by modulating the endocannabinoid system and disrupting the production of cytokines, which are proteins secreted by immune cells that trigger inflammation. As for curcumin, modern science has proven it has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, and numerous studies have shown it to be effective in treating inflammation and pain associated with arthritis.

One of the problems in treating inflammation with CBD and curcumin is that both compounds typically have poor bioavailability. That means they are not easily absorbed into your system due to poor absorption, rapid metabolism, and rapid elimination. However, Mellowment has solved the bioavailability problem. By subjecting CBD and curcumin to an advanced nano-emulsification process that shrinks and suspends the active ingredients microscopic droplets of oil which can easily pass through cell walls, Mellowment more than doubles their bioavailability. That means more CBD and curcumin reach systemic circulation, ensuring maximum effectiveness.

Each bottle of Mellowment High-Impact for Inflammation contains 30 softgels, with each softgel containing a 25mg dose of CBD and a 10mg dose of curcumin. Theyre formulated to be taken as needed, and most customers take one to four softgels per day. Mellowments CBD extracts are meticulously engineered from Colorado-grown hemp using an advanced chromatography process that removes all THC, eliminating the risk of failed drug tests and undesired psychoactive effects.

Whether youre looking for natural relief from discomfort caused by acute inflammation, or you want to combat chronic inflammation and reduce your risk for more serious degenerative conditions, Mellowment High Impact for Inflammation could be right for you

10 Years In The Making, New Stanford Hospital Officially Opens – Patch.com

Posted: November 20, 2019 at 1:45 pm

By Andrew Tan and Sophia Nesamoney, The Stanford Daily

After a decade of construction and development, Stanford's new hospital held its official opening on Sunday, marking the transition from the old facility to the new after nearly 60 years of patient service.

The building's first patient crossed the bridge between the two facilities on Sunday morning, relocating to one of the 368 entirely private patient rooms in the new $2 billion hospital.

The old hospital will no longer be used for patient treatment. Stanford Health Care is determining how to use the building, which is no longer in compliance with California earthquake code.

In preparation for the opening, hospital staff conducted three dress rehearsals to assess the flow and spatial arrangement of the hospital, complete with debriefs where doctors and nurses could provide their feedback.

Before the opening ceremony, new signage for the emergency department (ED) on the first floor was unveiled. Above the ED are operating rooms on the second floor and a wellness center including an interfaith chapel, family resource center and a garden on the third floor. The remaining four floors are reserved for patient rooms, each including a personal bathroom.

According to David Entwistle, president and CEO of Stanford Health Care, the redesign of the hospital was sparked by a single question: "What if you could build a hospital where no one could see the technology, but just see a welcoming interface?"

Each room includes wall-to-wall windows, a TV and tablet system that allows patients to order room service and consult with physicians and a family area with a fold-out bed, extra storage space and a table.

"It's so overwhelming to come to the hospital," Entwistle said. "Usually, people are not anticipating that they have to come in. They have to be taken out of other activities in their lives, whether it's work, family or school. So creating a comfortable environment is really important to us."

Though the project began largely in an effort to bring the Stanford medical campus up to state earthquake code, Entwistle also said the patient experience has been overhauled.

Entwistle said that Stanford hopes to lead the country in shifting towards preventative and precision-based medicine, with the eventual goal of moving toward a system in which patients can take more control of their healthcare and spend less time in a hospital bed.

"We want to know what we can do to identify, prevent and cure potential health problems precisely so that we can keep you out of the hospital in the long term," Entwistle said. "That's the next phase in healthcare that I get really excited about."

A guide to CBD topicals, balms, and lotions – Leafly

Posted: November 20, 2019 at 1:45 pm

Rae LlandNovember 18, 2019

(Irina_Strelnikova/iStock)

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a compound produced by cannabis and hemp plants. Unlike THC, CBD doesnt produce a feeling of being high.

CBD topicals such as lotions, balms, gels, or creams are infused with CBD to produce skin-friendly products that contain the medicinal properties of CBD. In topical form, CBD is most popularly used for managing pain and inflammation.

CBD topicals penetrate the skin to provide targeted relief, without entering the bloodstream. This makes them a fantastic choice for anyone who wants to focus the healing properties in specific problem areas rather than feel the effects throughout their body. CBD topicals can potentially provide relief for a variety of pain, headache, and skin issues such as:

Lo Friesen, lead chemist for cannabis wellness company Heylo, believes CBD topicals are also a fantastic preventative medicine. She says using these topicals every day, multiple times a day allows the body to not only uptake CBD quicker, but also build a CBD level in those areas and prevent worsening inflammation.

Its just preventative maintenance, says Friesen. For example, people who have arthritis in their hands who use [CBD topicals] on their hands every day are going to have less pain, less inflammation. Theyre going to have less pain in their hands over time than people who use it to treat [the pain as it happens].

Some CBD topicals may have bases such as shea butter, or oils like coconut, avocado, jojoba, or vitamin E. These nourishing ingredients are great for the skin, providing added benefit to the medicinal properties of CBD. Its also possible to find more traditional lotions with CBD or products with an Aquaphor base.

While lotions will be water based, creams usually have a fat or oil base, and balms a thicker base such as beeswax. Water-based lotions absorb more quickly into the skin, but oil based CBD topicals are more easily absorbed and get into the skin deeper. Meanwhile, gels can be useful for easier thicker application, making them possibly preferable for those with reduced hand dexterity, such as arthritis patients.

At the end of the day however, Friesen says, Just take your favorite skin care product and find something with similar ingredients, add CBD, and youve already made it better.

Unfortunately, due to an oversaturated market and lack of regulation, not all CBD topicals will produce the desired results. CBD can be sourced from either hemp or traditional cannabis, but their resulting extracts typically have quite a few differences in terms of the diversity of compounds found within them.

CBD extracts from cannabis tend to include a wide diversity of helpful compounds whereas hemps chemical diversity is more limited. Youll also want to make sure that a hemp-derived product actually contains CBDhemp seeds or stalk dont produce CBD, so its important to understand which part of the hemp plant was used in the extraction process.

Whats more, some products claim to have an abundance of CBD in them, but the reality doesnt always match the label. So how can consumers make sure they are getting a quality product?

Dr. Jeremy Riggle, chief scientist with cannabis wellness company Marys Medicinals weighed in:

Not all CBD products are created equal, and consumers should do their research. Ask questionswhat type of CBD extract does it contain: full spectrum, broad spectrum, or isolate? Where is the raw material sourced from? Does the producer use organic and sustainable agricultural practices? Does the supplier have a Certificate of Analysis showing test results for pesticides, heavy metals, residual solvents, microbials, cannabinoid potency, and terpene profile?

Finally, its worth noting that milligram content can make a difference, and with CBD, higher is generally better. Friesen says you get what you pay for, but that this is also why some make the switch over to CBD:THC topical products. Friesen believes these 1:1 or 1:3 ratio products are more effective than CBD on its own, due to the cannabinoids tendency to amplify each others effects. As such, patients may be able to use less to achieve similar effects, than they would with a CBD only product, and save money in the process.

All in all, there are plenty of great topical CBD products on the market for those who want to try a targeted method of delivering these helpful cannabinoids to problem areas and add CBD to their wellness routine.

Smart toilet could help in healthcare – KRON4

Posted: November 20, 2019 at 1:45 pm

MADISON, WI (CNN NEWSOURCE) Smartphones. Smartwatches. Whats next? Smart toilets?!

Yes, the future of flushing is almost here!

So we got very interested in the toilet, Josh Coon, a Biomolecular Chemistry Professor, said.

Some people think were crazy but I think were on to something, Ian Miller, a Staff Scientist, said.

In most workplaces, toilet talk is frowned upon.

Now we need to put that technology in the toilet and we need to make it broadly available, Coon said.

For researchers at UW Madison, flushing is the future.

Our toilet, our smart toilet will have a collection container in the front and then we can have pipes coming out the bottom which will pump the urine away for analysis in our mass spectrometers, Ben Anderson, a UW Madison Student said.

Doctors say urine samples are non-invasive and can tell a lot about a persons overall health. By collecting and processing this data, theyre calling a toilet revolution.

The opportunity to revolutionize toilets once again by allowing it to not just dispose of waste but to give you access to your health information, Anderson said.

Data from the toilet can show caffeine or alcohol intake or how your body metabolizes certain medicines.

But this way you could monitor that throughout the course of your life daily and we think that could really change healthcare and preventative medicine, Coon said.

Scientists are programming the potty to compile the information as a smartwatch would.

I think the reason the watch is so powerful is because you dont have to do anything different, people wore watches before but all of the sudden we have access to this data, Miller said.

Modernizing even the most private of places.

By being able to look at an actual bodily fluid with this sort of resolution, we can get a peek inside the body, Anderson said.

The team says theyre about three months from a working prototype.

Theyre planning another study over the next year analyzing how the technology functions.

Plano primary care practice Village Health Partners has merged with Texas Family Medicine, expanding VHPs reach into Frisco. Both practices are part of the Catalyst Health Network, whose goal is to empower independent primary care physicians while providing comprehensive care.

Village Health Partners is excited for the opportunity to continue to serve the North Texas community through our merger with Texas Family Medicine, said Village Health Partners Chief Operations Officer Patrick Figures via release. We believe this will help bring better services to patients, drawing on the strengths of both practices.

The merger will expand the two practices ability to provide preventative care, manage acute and chronic illness, offer mental health, nutrition, endocrinology, and dermatology services, and more. VHP is one of the largest independent led practices in Texas, and the two practices will serve 90,000 patients in the Plano, McKinney, and Frisco area.

We have long-standing ties to the city of Frisco and are proud to call the rest of North Texas our family, said Brandi Cook, Texas Family Medicine administrator via release.

Village Health Partners has always put the patient first, focusing on compassionate, convenient, and high-quality care, and we believe that Texas Family Medicine shares our values and culture, said Dr. Jamison Albracht, Village Health Partners president via release. We look forward to seeing Frisco as part of our home.
