FAQ | Integrative Medicine of New Jersey

Posted: March 29, 2019 at 1:46 am

New Patient FAQsIs the doctor a primary care physician?

Dr. Rimma Sherman is trained as a primary care physician and would be happy to provide acute care services. She will work with you closely as a consultant and coach in preventive, nutritional and integrative medicine to help you address the roots of chronic health problems.

MOST OF THE TESTING can be performed at the Integrative Medicine of New Jersey. Some testing can be done through conventional laboratories and others are only available through specialty laboratories. During your medical consultation, Dr. Sherman will determine which tests are needed and then our nurses will review testing recommendations, instructions (for instance, fasting or non-fasting, etc.) and costs.

Your financial resources, and how much testing you want to do, are taken into account and the plan for testing is reviewed with you. Testing is frequently done to assess nutritional status including amino acids, fatty acids, oxidative stress, vitamin levels, mitochondrial function, food allergies, and heavy metals. Many other tests are available, including genetic testing for a variety of conditions, hormone evaluations, bone health, gastrointestinal health, adrenal function, neurotransmitters and many others.

Some testing can be performed at home with test kits to collect urine, saliva or stool. Others may require you to go to a local laboratory to draw the blood. We also have an on-site phlebotomist for your convenience. In all cases, we will assist you in coordinating initial and follow-up testing.

While the testing gives a more complete picture of your status, effective care can be implemented without it, or testing can be done over time. You should not let this prevent you from seeing Dr. Rimma Sherman.

YES, DR. RIMMA SHERMANS MEDICAL license requires that she meet with a patient in order to provide an initial medical consultation, and there is no substitute for that initial doctor-patient connection. Follow-up appointments can be arranged by phone or in the office.

Dr. Rimma Sherman can, and does, prescribe medications whenever necessary. She is fully licensed and Board-certified.

Integrative Medicine of New Jersey works exclusively as an out-of-network provider for commercial plans. We charge a pre-paid amount based on the type of service, and will submit a claim on your behalf to your insurance company. We cannot assure you that services (office visits, phone consultations or lab tests) will be reimbursed. If insurance reimburses us, we will forward that on to you within 30 days. Some insurance carriers may cover medical services and laboratory tests performed by Dr. Sherman. Payment in full by check, cash or credit card is due at the time services are provided.

In an effort to help patients obtain and maintain life-long health and wellness, Dr. Rimma Sherman addresses the root cause of symptoms and corrects health ailments naturally rather than merely masking symptoms with drugs.

Dr. Sherman uses an innovative systems approach to assessing and treating your health care concerns. Perhaps you have experienced being examined by your doctor, having blood tests done, x-rays or other diagnostic tests taken, only for your doctor to report back that all your tests are normal. Yet, both you and your doctor know that you are sick. Unfortunately, this experience is all too common.

Most physicians were trained to look only in specific places for the answers, using the same familiar labs or diagnostic tests. Yet, many causes of illness cannot be found in these places. The usual tests do not look for food allergies, hidden infections, environmental toxins, mold exposures, nutritional deficiencies and metabolic imbalances. New gene testing can uncover underlying genetic predispositions that can be modified through diet, lifestyle, supplements or medications.

Dr. Rimma Sherman uses such testing to help her patients prevent illness and recover from many chronic and difficult to treat conditions. She is highly skilled in evaluating, assessing and treating chronic problems such as fibromyalgia, fatigue syndromes, autoimmune diseases, inflammatory disorders, mood and behavior disorders, memory problems, Parkinsons disease and other chronic, complex conditions. She also focus on the prevention and treatment of heart disease, diabetes, dementia, hormonal imbalances and digestive disorders.

THE INITIAL VISIT will include a 60-minute medical consultation with Dr. Rimma Sherman.Initial 60-minute MD consultation: $400.00MD Office Visit or Phone Follow-up 60-Minutes: $400MD Office Visit or Phone Follow-up 30-Minutes: $250Nutritionist Office Visit or Phone Follow-up 60-Minutes: $180Nutritionist Office Visit or Phone Follow-up 30-Minutes: $100For more information about our fees, see our Practice Policies.

YES, WE DO RECOMMEND that all our patients see our nutritionist. It is very important to review the food allergies with our nutritionist once they become available, because the situation can be very complicated and hard to manage without assistance. Nutritionists have different points of view reflecting different standards. The Nutritionist at Integrative Medicine of New Jersey works in collaboration with Dr. Sherman and makes recommendations based on Dr. Shermans opinions.

Nanochips & Smart Dust: New Face of the Human …

Posted: March 29, 2019 at 1:45 am

The human microchipping agenda has a new face: Nanochips & Smart Dust. What are they? Are you being set up to be a node on the grid? What can you do?

are the new technological means for the advancement of the human microchipping agenda. Due to their incredibly tiny size, both nanochips and Smart dust have the capacity to infiltrate the human body, become lodged within, and begin to set up a synthetic network on the inside which can be remotely controlled from the outside. Needless to say, this has grave freedom, privacy and health implications, because it means the New World Order would be moving from controlling the outside world (environment/society) to controlling the inside world (your body). This article explores what the advent of nanochips and Smart dust could mean for you.

Humanitys history is filled with examples of societies where the people were sharply divided into 2 categories: rulers and slaves. In the distant past, the slaves have usually been kept in place because the rulers had access to and control over the resources, such as money, food, water, weapons or other necessities of life (control of the environment). In our more recent history, control was implemented not only by monopolizing resources but also via propaganda (control of the mind). This has manifested itself in many ways, e.g. the caste system in India (you must remain in your position on the hierarchical ladder for life), the royal bloodlines in Rome, the Middle East and Europe (who claimed an inherent and divine right to rule), the centralization of power in Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia during the 1930s (where a single autocrat or a small committee decided the fate of millions), and finally in the West (especially in the US) with the advent of specialized PR and mind control techniques that were refined by the CIA. Projects like MKUltra gave the NWO controllers unheard of power to remotely and subconsciously influence people without them ever knowing, including the ability to create sex slaves and sleeper assassins.

Project MKUltra was at its height 60+ years ago, and things have moved on a lot since then. We are now entering an era where technological advancements are giving the NWO conspirators influence over a new realm control of the emotions, or more accurately, control over the entire mind-emotion nexus in the human body. I am talking about microchips, tiny electronic devices which can be embedded under your skin, and which receive and transmit information. Although microchips have been around awhile, they are now outdated. What we are facing is something much tinier than a microchip, and therefore much more of a threat: nanochips and smart dust.

The components of a Smart dust sensor or mote. Image credit: CatchUpdates.com

So what is ananochip? The word nano is 3 orders of magnitude smaller than micro. Nano means one billionth while micro means one millionth. While microchips are about the size of a grain of rice and measured in millimeters, nanochips are completely invisible to the human eye. Some nanochips are far smaller than human hair (e.g. the -chip that is 0.4 x 0.4 mm). In 2015, IBM announced thatthey had developed functional nanochips measuring just 7 nm or nanometers (7 billionths of 1 meter). In comparison, a strand of human DNA is about 2.5 nm and the diameter of a single red blood cell is about 7500 nm! These nanochips power themselves from their environment (they dont need batteries) and have a 100 year life span. They are slated to be rolled out first on products (so the corporatocracy can have total knowledge of consumer behavior in real time) before they can be used inside peoples bodies. Did you know that nerve cells grow onto/meld with the chip?

In this Leak Project video, the presenter claims that the NWO aimto introduce 100 trillion nanochips into the world, so that literally every single thing in the world is tagged, including you. He includes many patents and other docs as proof of this agenda. He singles out the company HP (Hewlett Packard) as being the executor of the plan to construct a synthetic central nervous system for the Earth linking all resources and people in real time.

Smart dust. Image credit: Waking Times

You may already be familiar with the Smart agenda or better put the Smart Deception. For those new to this, the Smart agenda is to create a giant electromagnetic grid or network that encompasses the entire Earth. Everything that moves is to be made or injected with some kind of sensor or motethat connects it to the grid including household products, appliances, food/drink items, animals, plants and humans too. Smart dust is another name for these motes which will act as mini computers, broadcasting and receiving. They aresmall wireless microelectromechanical sensors (MEMS). As of 2013, a mote was about the size of a grain of rice, but with technology advancing all the time, these will keep on reducing in size. Motes can be ingested through food (as will be discussed below).

The Smart agenda is basically synonymous with the UN Agenda 21 or Agenda 2030, and the Smart grid is synonymous with the IoT (Internet of Things) which is also going to use the new 5G network to achieve its desired saturation levels.

While this kind of technology can be used for the benefit of mankind, like many things today, it has been weaponized. The existence of smart dust forms a massive threat against the sovereignty of every human being alive. What we are up against is nothing less than the attempted technological possession of humanity.

In a fundamental way, vaccines, GMOs, bioengineered food and geoengineering/chemtrails are all connected, as they are delivery systems whereby this miniature technology of nanochips and Smart dust is planned to be inserted into our bodies. Some chemtrails contain Smart dust motes which readily infiltrate the body, communicate with other motes in your body, set up their own network and which can, unfortunately, be remotely controlled.Even if you are fastidious about what you eat and what you expose yourself to, it is difficult to see how you can avoid breathing in a mote of smart dust that was dropped on you by a plane spraying chemtrails.

With nanochips and motes inside your body, the NWO criminals can combine the IoT smart grid with brain mapping and other technological information in their attempt to pull off their ultimate endgame: to remotely influence and control an entire population by overriding (and programming) the thoughts, feelings and actions of the masses.

(The rabbit hole definitely does not stop at nanochips and Smart dust. An entire new category of lifeforms are being forged via synthetic biology.Morgellons fibers are self-aware, self-replicating and are likely assisting the dark agenda to remotely control the thoughts, feelings and bodily functions of the entire population. This will be explored in other articles.)

Naturally, the full scope and goal of this agenda will not be revealed to the public as the technology is rolled out. Instead, we will continue to be told how wonderful, cool, trendy and efficient it all is. Note especially how all of this will be promoted under the banner of speed and convenience (while people unwittingly flush their freedom, health and privacy down the toilet). Yes, being surrounded by fields of manmade EM radiation everywhere you go will be disastrous for your health too.

The nanochips will also be pushed using peer pressure, encouraging people to get in the game out of social conformity. Like many governmental programs, the chips may initially be voluntary before they become mandatory. There is already a segment of society that is willingly chipping itself using tattoo ink. Recently, a company in Wisconsin (Three Square Market or 32M) introduced such an internal system and began encouraging its employees to get chipped. Although it was not mandatory, reportedly about half of them (41 out of 85) stepped forward and chose to get chipped!

So what can you do about this? Firstly, get informed and make sure you understand the true nature and danger of nanochip and smart technology. Secondly, make sure you never acquiesce to getting chipped, no matter what reason youre given. Doing so is tantamount to opening yourself to being remotely controlled without your knowledge. Thirdly, if you do discover a chip inside your body, get it removed. There are various ways to do. Some people crudely cut the chips out if they are large enough (i.e. a microchip instead of a nanochip). Other people claim you can used magnets such as neodymium magnets to render the nanochips useless. Hopefully, there will be intelligent inventors to step forward with new technologies that we can use to deactivate, disable and remove nanochips inside of our bodies.

The human microchipping agenda is really the same thing as the transhumanist agenda to turn mankind into machine which will ultimately mean becoming not superhuman but subhuman.

We need to be very careful and think critically as we go forward into a world of fantastic technology. Like the surgeons knife, it can heal or it can kill. Given everything we know, it would be nave to believe that nanochips will only be used for good. If were not aware, this technology will be used by the power-hungry to enslave us by tricking us with promises of utopia. Nanobots are already being used in Western medicine for all sorts of diseases. Once the smart grid is established, how will you avoid being monitored, tracked and influenced 24/7 every day of the year?

No matter how good the technology becomes, it can never replace the spirit of consciousness inside of you, which is your true power.

Diabetes – Symptoms and causes – Mayo Clinic

Posted: March 27, 2019 at 10:47 pm

Overview

Diabetes mellitus refers to a group of diseases that affect how your body uses blood sugar (glucose). Glucose is vital to your health because it's an important source of energy for the cells that make up your muscles and tissues. It's also your brain's main source of fuel.

The underlying cause of diabetes varies by type. But, no matter what type of diabetes you have, it can lead to excess sugar in your blood. Too much sugar in your blood can lead to serious health problems.

Chronic diabetes conditions include type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Potentially reversible diabetes conditions include prediabetes when your blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be classified as diabetes and gestational diabetes, which occurs during pregnancy but may resolve after the baby is delivered.

Diabetes symptoms vary depending on how much your blood sugar is elevated. Some people, especially those with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes, may not experience symptoms initially. In type 1 diabetes, symptoms tend to come on quickly and be more severe.

Some of the signs and symptoms of type 1 and type 2 diabetes are:

Type 1 diabetes can develop at any age, though it often appears during childhood or adolescence. Type 2 diabetes, the more common type, can develop at any age, though it's more common in people older than 40.

To understand diabetes, first you must understand how glucose is normally processed in the body.

Insulin is a hormone that comes from a gland situated behind and below the stomach (pancreas).

Glucose a sugar is a source of energy for the cells that make up muscles and other tissues.

The exact cause of type 1 diabetes is unknown. What is known is that your immune system which normally fights harmful bacteria or viruses attacks and destroys your insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. This leaves you with little or no insulin. Instead of being transported into your cells, sugar builds up in your bloodstream.

Type 1 is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic susceptibility and environmental factors, though exactly what those factors are is still unclear. Weight is not believed to be a factor in type 1 diabetes.

In prediabetes which can lead to type 2 diabetes and in type 2 diabetes, your cells become resistant to the action of insulin, and your pancreas is unable to make enough insulin to overcome this resistance. Instead of moving into your cells where it's needed for energy, sugar builds up in your bloodstream.

Exactly why this happens is uncertain, although it's believed that genetic and environmental factors play a role in the development of type 2 diabetes too. Being overweight is strongly linked to the development of type 2 diabetes, but not everyone with type 2 is overweight.

During pregnancy, the placenta produces hormones to sustain your pregnancy. These hormones make your cells more resistant to insulin.

Normally, your pancreas responds by producing enough extra insulin to overcome this resistance. But sometimes your pancreas can't keep up. When this happens, too little glucose gets into your cells and too much stays in your blood, resulting in gestational diabetes.

Risk factors for diabetes depend on the type of diabetes.

Although the exact cause of type 1 diabetes is unknown, factors that may signal an increased risk include:

Researchers don't fully understand why some people develop prediabetes and type 2 diabetes and others don't. It's clear that certain factors increase the risk, however, including:

Any pregnant woman can develop gestational diabetes, but some women are at greater risk than are others. Risk factors for gestational diabetes include:

Long-term complications of diabetes develop gradually. The longer you have diabetes and the less controlled your blood sugar the higher the risk of complications. Eventually, diabetes complications may be disabling or even life-threatening. Possible complications include:

Nerve damage (neuropathy). Excess sugar can injure the walls of the tiny blood vessels (capillaries) that nourish your nerves, especially in your legs. This can cause tingling, numbness, burning or pain that usually begins at the tips of the toes or fingers and gradually spreads upward.

Left untreated, you could lose all sense of feeling in the affected limbs. Damage to the nerves related to digestion can cause problems with nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or constipation. For men, it may lead to erectile dysfunction.

Most women who have gestational diabetes deliver healthy babies. However, untreated or uncontrolled blood sugar levels can cause problems for you and your baby.

Complications in your baby can occur as a result of gestational diabetes, including:

Complications in the mother also can occur as a result of gestational diabetes, including:

Prediabetes may develop into type 2 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes can't be prevented. However, the same healthy lifestyle choices that help treat prediabetes, type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes can also help prevent them:

Lose excess pounds. If you're overweight, losing even 7 percent of your body weight for example, 14 pounds (6.4 kilograms) if you weigh 200 pounds (90.7 kilograms) can reduce the risk of diabetes.

Don't try to lose weight during pregnancy, however. Talk to your doctor about how much weight is healthy for you to gain during pregnancy.

To keep your weight in a healthy range, focus on permanent changes to your eating and exercise habits. Motivate yourself by remembering the benefits of losing weight, such as a healthier heart, more energy and improved self-esteem.

Sometimes medication is an option as well. Oral diabetes drugs such as metformin (Glucophage, Glumetza, others) may reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes but healthy lifestyle choices remain essential. Have your blood sugar checked at least once a year to check that you haven't developed type 2 diabetes.

CROM Stem Cell Therapy- Denver, Colorado

Posted: March 27, 2019 at 10:46 pm

With over 22 years experience treating musculoskeletal conditions, Colorado Rehabilitation and Occupational Medicine is a leader in Regenerative Medicine in Denver, Colorado, offering both Stem Cell Therapy and Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP).

Stem Cell Therapy is a cutting-edge treatment with the capacity to repair injured, torn, or arthritic tissue by delivering biological material directly to the site of the problem. Stem Cells have the ability to release biological signals to the cells in your own body that initiate them to regenerate. CROM uses only non-controversial, non-fetal Stem Cells. Much of the excitement surrounding Stem Cells lies in their potential to repair labral tears, rotator cuff tears or partial tears, and osteoarthritis, while avoiding surgical treatment and joint replacements.

Similar to Stem Cell therapy, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is another regenerative medicine approach whereby blood is drawn from the patient, and then spun in a centrifuge to separate the blood plasma, which contains concentrations of healing growth factors and platelets. This therapeutic concentration is then injected to the area of injured tissue, where it can assist in healing tendonitis, tendon or labral tears, and arthritis.

Many professional athletes have decided to use Stem Cell Therapy treatments to help them heal from athletic injuries and reach peak condition. Based on mounting case studies, we are closer to Regenerative Medicine being covered through commercial (private) insurance.

Now these advanced medical treatments are available in Colorado from the states premiere physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians-CROM. CROM performs stem cell therapy and PRP at multiple offices in the Denver area If you do not live in the Denver area or Colorado, feel free to contact us about setting up an appointment, and how our treatments work.

Stem Cell Therapy treatments are performed after an initial consultation to determine if these treatments are suitable for your specific problem, or whether other treatments, which may be less expensive and/or covered by insurance, are optimal.

Stem Cells injections are performed under ultrasound guidance by trained physical medicine and rehabilitation doctor. Follow up exams with ultrasound evaluations will evaluate your progress after the injection.

CROMs Dr. Scott Primack discusses Regenerative Medicine andSports Injuries on The Big Show on Mile High Sports Radio

CROM physicians are Board Certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Our Musculo-skeletal specialists administer tissue grafts containing Stem Cells directly into an injury site (through ultrasound or X ray guidance) to help regenerate cartilage, tendons and muscle in order to provide pain relief and increased function.

Patients who have chronic joint, muscle or tendon conditions that have not responded to traditional treatment. Also, patients who do not wish to consider surgery for labral tears, partial thickness rotator cuff tears, a knee or hip replacement or have other severe arthritic or tendon problems may wish to consider stem cell therapy. In some cases, stem cell therapy may be appropriate for treatment of spinal conditions.

Under usual circumstances, the bodys ability to repair and replace damaged cartilage, tendons, or other specialized tissue in adults is limited. Use of bone marrow concentrate or amniotic tissue grafts may offer the ability to help repair these tissues. Stem Cell Therapy is only performed after an initial consultation by a CROM Physician specializing in Musculo-Skeletal Care. The physician will review your medical history, perform a clinical examination, and discuss stem cell treatments as well as other potential treatments in order to give you the information necessary for you to determine if stem cell therapy is the best option.

1. Obtain tissue containing stem cells through a simple procedure that concentrates your own bone marrow. This marrow contains stem cells, platelets, and other factors which promote tissue growth. Or, a graft of amniotic tissue from a specially selected and screened donor (which also contains stem cells) may be used. This is obtained in advance and because of the unique properties of amniotic tissue no tissue typing is required, and there is no rejection of this type of graft.

2. Whichever approach you and your CROM Physician specialist select, your doctor will numb the site of injection with a local anesthetic.

3.The Bone Marrow Concentrate or amniotic tissue graft will be administered by your CROM Physician through an ultrasound-guided injection. In some cases, X-ray guidance may be used.

4.You will then be able to relax and let the tissue graft get to work. Your CROM Physician Specialists will discuss an appropriate follow up and, if indicated, rehabilitation program with you. In most cases, there are few activity restrictions required, and no restrictions on usual activities such as driving.

We utilize two types of tissue grafts containing stem cells:

Amniotic Tissue Graft Stem Cells- Amniotic tissue is collected under sterile technique from screened donors at the time of cesarean section.

Grafts of amniotic tissue (which include stem cells) from a donor do not involve fetal tissue, nor is there any harm to a fetus, baby, or mother in obtaining these stem cells from the donor. This type of stem cell therapy is not opposed by the Catholic Church or any other group on religious or ethical grounds.

Bone Marrow Graft Stem Cells-Bone marrow tissue containing stem cells is obtained by a simple aspiration procedure from your own bone marrow, and then concentrated before injection at the site of injury.

Most insurance companies do not cover Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate or Amniotic Tissue Graft at this time. However, we have had some success with workers compensation coverage for this treatment, and many insurance companies may cover the initial consultation as well as some aspects of the treatment, such as the ultrasound or X-ray guidance and follow up appointments.

CROMs self-pay pricing is very competitive and we strive to provide this treatment as cost-effectively as possible. The cost of Bone Marrow Aspirate or Amniotic Tissue Graft Stem Cell treatments varies depending on the site of injury, the amount of graft material required, and whether or not Bone Marrow Aspirate or Amniotic Tissue Graft is utilized. Because of this, final prices can be determined after an initial consultation with your CROM Physician Specialist. Please contact us for more information.

Hormone therapy: Is it right for you? – Mayo Clinic

Hormone therapy: Is it right for you?

Hormone therapy was once routinely used to treat menopausal symptoms and protect long-term health. Then large clinical trials showed health risks. What does this mean for you?

Hormone replacement therapy medications containing female hormones to replace the ones the body no longer makes after menopause is sometimes used to treat common menopausal symptoms, including hot flashes and vaginal discomfort.

Hormone therapy has also been proved to prevent bone loss and reduce fracture in postmenopausal women.

Along with the benefits, there are risks associated with using hormone therapy. These risks depend on a few factors, including the type of hormone therapy, the dose and how long the medication is taken. For best results, hormone therapy should be tailored to each person and re-evaluated every so often to be sure its benefits still outweigh the risks.

The benefits of hormone therapy depend, in part, on whether you take systemic hormone therapy or low-dose vaginal preparations of estrogen.

Systemic hormone therapy. Systemic estrogen which comes in pill, skin patch, gel, cream or spray form remains the most effective treatment for the relief of troublesome menopausal hot flashes and night sweats. Estrogen can also ease vaginal symptoms of menopause, such as dryness, itching, burning and discomfort with intercourse.

Combined estrogen and progesterone therapy may reduce the risk of colon cancer. Some data also suggest that estrogen can decrease the risk of heart disease when taken early in the postmenopausal years. Systemic estrogen helps protect against the bone-thinning disease called osteoporosis. However, doctors usually recommend medications called bisphosphonates to treat osteoporosis.

If you haven't had your uterus removed, your doctor will typically prescribe estrogen along with progesterone or progestin (progesterone-like medication). This is because estrogen alone, when not balanced by progesterone, can stimulate growth of the lining of the uterus, increasing the risk of uterine cancer. If you have had your uterus removed (hysterectomy), you don't need to take progestin.

In the largest clinical trial to date, a combination estrogen-progestin pill (Prempro) increased the risk of certain serious conditions, including:

Subsequent studies have suggested that these risks vary, depending on age. For example, women who begin hormone therapy more than 10 or 20 years from the onset of menopause or at age 60 or older are at greater risk of the above conditions. But if hormone therapy is started before the age of 60 or within 10 years of menopause, the benefits appear to outweigh the risks.

The risks of hormone therapy may also vary depending on whether estrogen is given alone or with progestin, the dose and type of estrogen, and other health factors such as your risks of heart and blood vessel (cardiovascular) disease, cancer risks, and family medical history.

All of these risks should be considered in deciding whether hormone therapy might be an option for you.

Despite its health risks, systemic estrogen is still the most effective treatment for menopausal symptoms. The benefits of hormone therapy may outweigh the risks if you're healthy and you:

Women who experience early menopause, particularly those who had their ovaries removed and don't take estrogen therapy until at least age 45, have a higher risk of:

For women who reach menopause prematurely, the protective benefits of hormone therapy usually outweigh the risks.

Your age, type of menopause and time since menopause play significant roles in the risks associated with hormone therapy. Talk with your doctor about your personal risks.

Women who have or previously had breast cancer, ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer, blood clots in the legs or lungs, stroke, liver disease, or unexplained vaginal bleeding should usually not take hormone therapy.

If you aren't bothered by menopausal symptoms and started menopause after age 45, you do not need hormone therapy to stay healthy. Instead, talk to your doctor about strategies to reduce the risk of conditions such as osteoporosis and heart disease. These strategies might include lifestyle changes and medications other than hormone therapy for long-term protection.

Talk to your doctor about these strategies:

If you haven't had a hysterectomy and are using systemic estrogen therapy, you'll also need progestin. Your doctor can help you find the delivery method that offers the most benefits and convenience with the least risks and cost.

You may be able to manage menopausal hot flashes with healthy-lifestyle approaches, such as keeping cool, limiting caffeinated beverages and alcohol, and practicing paced relaxed breathing or other relaxation techniques. For vaginal concerns, such as dryness or painful intercourse, a vaginal moisturizer or lubricant may provide relief. You might also ask your doctor about the prescription medication ospemifene (Osphena), which may help with episodes of painful intercourse.

To determine if hormone therapy is a good treatment option for you, talk to your doctor about your individual symptoms and health risks. Be sure to keep the conversation going throughout your menopausal years.

As researchers learn more about hormone therapy and other menopausal treatments, recommendations may change. If you continue to have bothersome menopausal symptoms, review treatment options with your doctor on a regular basis.

Gene Therapy Technology Explanied

Posted: March 27, 2019 at 10:44 pm

Virtually all cells in the human body contain genes, making them potential targets for gene therapy. However, these cells can be divided into two major categories: somatic cells (most cells of the body) or cells of the germline (eggs or sperm). In theory it is possible to transform either somatic cells or germ cells.

Gene therapy using germ line cells results in permanent changes that are passed down to subsequent generations. If done early in embryologic development, such as during preimplantation diagnosis and in vitro fertilization, the gene transfer could also occur in all cells of the developing embryo. The appeal of germ line gene therapy is its potential for offering a permanent therapeutic effect for all who inherit the target gene. Successful germ line therapies introduce the possibility of eliminating some diseases from a particular family, and ultimately from the population, forever. However, this also raises controversy. Some people view this type of therapy as unnatural, and liken it to "playing God." Others have concerns about the technical aspects. They worry that the genetic change propagated by germ line gene therapy may actually be deleterious and harmful, with the potential for unforeseen negative effects on future generations.

Somatic cells are nonreproductive. Somatic cell therapy is viewed as a more conservative, safer approach because it affects only the targeted cells in the patient, and is not passed on to future generations. In other words, the therapeutic effect ends with the individual who receives the therapy. However, this type of therapy presents unique problems of its own. Often the effects of somatic cell therapy are short-lived. Because the cells of most tissues ultimately die and are replaced by new cells, repeated treatments over the course of the individual's life span are required to maintain the therapeutic effect. Transporting the gene to the target cells or tissue is also problematic. Regardless of these difficulties, however, somatic cell gene therapy is appropriate and acceptable for many disorders, including cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, cancer, and certain infectious diseases. Clinicians can even perform this therapy in utero, potentially correcting or treating a life-threatening disorder that may significantly impair a baby's health or development if not treated before birth.

In summary, the distinction is that the results of any somatic gene therapy are restricted to the actual patient and are not passed on to his or her children. All gene therapy to date on humans has been directed at somatic cells, whereas germline engineering in humans remains controversial and prohibited in for instance the European Union.

Somatic gene therapy can be broadly split into two categories:

Feel Better with TRT and Get Back in the Game!

We hear a lot about the changes caused by menopause in women, but much less about andropause (so called manopause) or low testosterone in men. Young men in their late teens and twenties seem to have boundless energy driven by high testosterone levels, but that doesnt last. Testosterone levels drop about one percent a year after age 30 and many men experience an even steeper decline. This steady drop in testosterone can lead to a need for Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT).

Physical signs of declining testosterone (low T) include decreased muscle strength and size, increased fat- especially belly fat, loss of body hair, dry eyes, elevated blood pressure, thinning dry skin, enlarging fatty breasts (gynecomastia), and lack of body odor.

The Adam Questionaire is a sensitive tool for screening for low T. A decrease in sex drive or erectile dysfunction suggest low T. Other symptoms include decreased energy or strength, decreased enjoyment of life, sadness or grumpiness, falling asleep after dinner, or a recent deterioration in work performance.

Fortunately, most men can be restored to hormonal health with proper medical care. The benefits of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) include increased energy and strength, increased muscle mass, decreased osteoporosis, improved cholesterol profile, lowered blood sugars, improved sexual function, and increased longevity.

Men experiencing the symptoms of low T need a focused medical history, physical exam, and laboratory testing by a physician with specialized training in TRT. Although testosterone may be replaced by transdermal gels or implanted pellets, most patients are best managed by self administered injections of bioidentical testosterone and HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin). Some men may also need estrogen blocking pills.

The good news is that many of these negative symptoms are not really from aging at all, but rather from low testosterone. You can improve your health and recapture the joy and vigor of life.

TRT is safe if appropriately prescribed and monitored. There is no evidence that testosterone causes cancer, however preexisting prostate cancer may grow faster with TRT. It is very important to have a prostate exam and a serum PSA (prostatic specific antigen) level prior to beginning therapy, and to monitor the PSA level regularly.

You may very well start feeling better within days. However, body composition changes will transform over several months as your testosterone (T) level is optimally tuned. Several patients have already reported weight loss and lean muscle gain within the first month. They have have also reported increased erection strength, better sex drive, and an overall uptick in energy.

Male breast enlargement (gynecomastia) is a sign of testosterone/estrogen imbalance. Patients with this problem may need an estrogen blocker in addition to TRT. Therapy does not reverse the enlargement, but often Laser Assisted Liposuction can correct it very nicely.

The Laser Center of Maryland proudly provides Baltimore, Annapolis, Columbia, Severna Park, Glen Burnie and Pasadena, Maryland with comprehensive and advanced laser surgery and cosmetic surgery.
