Drive for stem cell donors in Langley – Surrey Now-Leader

Posted: August 2, 2017 at 11:44 am

Marie Grim of Langley is looking for 100 people between the ages of 17 and 35 who are willing to take a few moments to have their cheeks swabbed.

Theres no pain, no fuss, she said.

And you could save someones life, anywhere in the world.

You could match with someone in Japan.

The campaign to sign up more potential stem cell donors, people who are willing to allow DNA samples to taken using cotton swabs, was inspired by the experience of her sister-in-law.

Cloverdale resident Tania Grim, a mother of four was diagnosed with leukemia in January.

She had to wait several months before a compatible donor was found whose stem cells will be used to replace bone marrow and abnormal white blood cells eradicated by a combination of chemotherapy and radiation.

We have been on quite the journey, Marie said.

I have sat with her at appointments and heard others get news of their donor while she had not.

Now that Tania has her donor, Marie would like to improve the odds for other families.

She already has a location and tentative date to collect the swabs September 8 at Immanuel Christian Reformed Church in Langley if she can round up enough donors.

Tania, who is preparing for her stem cell procedure in September, urged prospective stem cell contributors to sign up.

I am so grateful that the word is being spread about the huge need for donors, Tania said.

It is a very simple thing to do that can save a life.

If you are the right age to be a donor, you can contact Marie at 604-530-1326 or by email at mariegrim@hotmail.com.

Interested donors can also contact Canadian Blood Services directly at https://blood.ca/en.

More than 390,000 Canadians have joined the OneMatch Stem Cell and Marrow Network registry maintained by Canadian Blood Services, volunteering to be stem cell donors for any patient in need of a transplant, anywhere in the world.

Right now, the agency says about 70 per cent of eligible donors on the registry are Caucasian, which means the odds of finding match for other ethnicities, such as Canadians with indigenous, Asian or African heritage, are not good.

The Canadian registry connects to an international network established by the World Marrow Donor Association (WMDA) that has access to over 28 million donors in over 53 countries.

Not everyone who registers will be matched to a patient and asked to donate, but each registrant provides hope for those waiting, a message posted to the agency website states.

A person could be a match within a few months of registering, a year later or even seven years later.

If a volunteer donor is found to be a match, they face a relatively minor surgical procedure and can expect to make a quick recovery.

The agency says over 80 diseases and disorders can be treated with a stem cell transplant.

There are hundreds of patients in Canada waiting for a match, but only half of them find a match.

Patients are more likely to find a matching donor from within their own ethnic group.

The odds of family members matching is extremely slight, the agency said, which is why it does not support donor drives targeting relatives.

UCI researchers use stem cells as cancer-seeking missiles – 89.3 KPCC

A close-up of cell mutations that cause cancer. Steve Gschmeissner/Science Source

Chemotherapy is brutal a medicinal atomic bomb that destroys large swaths of cells, both cancerous and normal. And as a result, patients are often left physically devastated.

In a new study published in Science Translational Medicine, scientists at UC Irvine say they've come up with a way to use stem cells to help ameliorate those side effects. Think of it as a surgical strike with cancer-seeking missiles.

Professor Weian Zhao and his colleagues from UC Irvine modified stem cells so that they'd be attracted to enzymes released by breast cancer tumors. So, when injected into the body, the stem cells seek out the cells and bond with them.

The enzymes the scientists identified cause tissue to clump up into bundles of collagen and protein to create stiff tumors. The tumors become lumps that a patient can sometimes feel, and they act as a protective home for the cancerous cells.

The stem cells release an enzyme of their own, in turn, activating a type of chemotherapy that's been injected into the patient, which is inert until in comes in contact with the enzyme. The idea being that the chemotherapy only causes toxicity to a localized area, instead of destroying everything in its path.

"We can use a stem cells to specifically localize and produce the drugs only at the tumor site, so that we can spare the healthy tissue," said Zhao. "So, we can make the treatment more effective and less toxic to the patient."

"I think this is pretty unique in a way that it can target specific metastatic tissues with reduced toxicity overall," said Min Yu, assistant professor at the department of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine at USC. "So, in that sense, I think it's very novel and very unique approach."

Yu, who was not involved in the research, complimented the UCI team's methods and results, especially how effective the treatment was on the particular cancer cell that they focused on. However, she said, from patient to patient and cancer to cancer, there are a myriad of different cells responsible, making treatment notoriously difficult to generalize. The therapy isn't a sure thing.

Zhao acknowledged that his team has a while to go before it can prove that the treatment is effective in people. So far, it's only been tested in mice. As a result, FDA approval and human trials could be years away.

The medical community agrees that testosterone begins to decline gradually in most men by the time they reach the age of 30. If left unchecked, testosterone levels will continue to decline as you age, meaning that the average 50-year-old will have far less testosterone than the average 35-year-old, even though individuals are in a state of testosterone decline.

The effects of diminishing testosterone should be hardly noticeable for most men in their 30s. Once you hit 50, however, the effects may truly start to set in. Your sex drive may be reduced, you may have difficulty getting or maintaining an erection, your overall mood and energy may drop, and you may feel symptoms of irritability and even depression. Fortunately, the availability of testosterone replacement therapies for men over 50 means that you can break this cycle and regain at least some of the vitality you possessed as a young man.

VCLV Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT)offers physician prescribed and medically supervised Testosterone Therapy programs helping patients enter a cost effective and comprehensive Low Testosterone Treatment program designed to treat adult men over the age of 35 suffering from symptoms and problems associated with Low-T,hypogonadism and andropause also known as "male menopause".

Transgender man gives birth to baby boy. ‘Love is possible,’ he says. So is ‘being a loving family.’ – Washington Post

Posted: August 2, 2017 at 11:44 am

Trystan Reese, a transgender man, gave birth to a healthy boy on July 14 in Portland, Ore. (Amber Ferguson/The Washington Post)

Trystan Reese and his partner, Biff Chaplow, were already seasoned parents when they decided last year that they wanted another child.

Years earlier, they had adopted Chaplows niece and nephew after his sister was no longer able to take care of them. They raised the two children as their own, bringing them up in Los Angeles, where Reese and Chaplow worked in nonprofits, then moving the family to Portland, Ore., where they live now.

Adoption was a taxing process, Reese said, and learning how to care for two toddlers ushered ina suite of new challenges and lifestyle changes, as it does for any parent. Butit was also eye-opening.

After the dust settled, I just realized how much I loved our kids, Reese told The Washington Post, and how much room there was in our life for our family to grow.

After trying for several months, Reese, a transgender man,got pregnant. And just weeks ago, he gave birth to a healthy baby boy.

Reeseand Chaplow documented the pregnancy in blog posts and on social media, hoping to demystify what it means for atransgender man to give birth and to create a new sense of normalcy for people in similar situations.

Their familys story and their willingness to go public with itreflects a shift in public attitudes about pregnancy and parenting in transgender men as social stigmas have started to chipaway and advocacy groupshavecampaigned for greater acceptance.

Reese and Chaplow, perhaps more than anything else, want to make one thing clear: They are not the first. Far from it.

People get the idea that this was some experiment that we embarked on, Reese said, adding that he watched friends go through the same process after transitioning. This is tested ground. This is something that has been done in a very safe and healthy way. Were loath to be put in that pioneer category.

A number of transgender men havegone through successful pregnancies in recent years and throughout history, for that matter some of them long afterbeginninghormone replacement therapy. In one well-known example, the Village Voice published a narrative about Matt Rice, a transgender manwho conceived in 1999 through artificial insemination and gave birth to a baby boy. Other more recent pregnancies among transgender men have been well documented in media reports.

Reese, 34, was assigned female sex at birth and lived as a woman untilhis late teens. After counseling, he began taking hormones around age 20and started identifying as a man.He met Chaplow nearly eight years ago and said it was love at first sight. They took custody of Chaplows sisters children in 2011.

When they decided tohave a biological child, they sought out medical advice. Doctors told them that because Reese had only undergone hormone therapyin his transition, preparingto conceivewouldnt be very different than fora woman who had been on hormonal birth control.

Reese said he became pregnant about five months after he stopped taking testosterone.

When I found out, it was equal parts elation and fear, he said. I was soexcited to be on this journey with the person that I love, and then also really scared.Could I do this? Pregnancy is hard, labor is hard, and I hoped that Id be able to handle it all.

When Reese was six months along, he addressed peoples curiosities and misconceptions about his pregnancy in a videohe shared on social media. Sitting on his couch with a melon-sized bump under his shirt, he explained how the testosterone he took caused him to grow facial hair and made his voice drop but left him with a functioninguterus and ovaries.

Ive never wished or wanted to be assigned male at birth or to have my body match up exactly with that of my partner, who was assigned male at birth, Reese said. Im okay being trans. I think its kind of awesome, actually, and Ive never wanted my body to be different.

If you can understand that then it starts to make more sense that it would not seem totally bizarre for me to want to create and carry a baby, because I dont wish that my body was not a trans body, he said. Im okay being a man who has a uterus and who has the capacity and capability of carrying a baby.

Reeses pregnancy had all the ups and downs of any pregnancy, complete with swollen feet, fatigue, mood swings and all the anticipation and excitement that comes with bringing a child into the world, he said.

On July 14, after 30 hours of labor, Reese gave birth to Leo, a 9.5-pound baby who he says is in great health.

Reese told The Post henever imagined his life would take such a turn whenhe began his gender transition some 14 years ago.

I didnt think I would ever find someone I would fall in love with and would be with me. Being able to adopt two brilliant, funny, sweet kids was something that I never dreamed of. The fact that any of this happened has been a total surprise to me, because thats not the trans story were told, that love is possible, that being a loving family is possible.

Evolution’s Third Rail Transgenerational Epigenetics Can Have a Profound Impact – Discovery Institute

Posted: August 2, 2017 at 11:43 am

In the spring of 2006 I gave a talk on the campus of Cornell University and afterwards was joined by then Cornell professors Richard Harrison and Kern Reeve for a sort of panel discussion or debate about biological evidences and origins. I presented a dozen or so interesting and important evidences that I felt needed to be recognized in any discussion of origins. The evidences falsified key predictions of evolution and so needed to be acknowledged and reckoned with, one way or another.

One of the items on my list was the so-called directed adaptation mechanisms which, broadly construed, can include everything from non-random, directed, mutations to transgenerational epigenetic inheritance. But I was in for a big surprise when Harrison and Reeve gave their response.

Directed adaptation is reminiscent of Lamarckism. Rather than natural selection acting over long time periods on biological variation which is random with respect to need, directed adaptation mechanisms provide rapid biological change in response to environmental challenges. Like physiological responses, directed adaptation can help an organism adjust to shifts in the environment. But those adaptations can then be inherited by later generations. Stresses which your grandparents were subjected to may be playing out in your own cells.

In the 20th century, evolutionists had strongly rejected any such capability. Lamarckism was the third rail in evolutionary circles. And for good reason, for it would falsify evolutionary theory. But empirical evidence had long since pointed toward the unthinkable, and by the 21st century the evidence was rapidly mounting.

While there was of course still much to learn in 2006 about directed adaptation (as there still is today for that matter), it could no longer be denied, and needed to be addressed. At least, that is what I thought.

I was shocked when Harrison and Reeve flatly denied the whole story. Rick waved it off as nothing more than some overblown and essentially discredited work done by Barry Hall and John Cairns, back in the 1970s and 80s (for example here).

But there was a body of work that had gone far beyond the work of Hall and Cairns. Incredulously I responded that entire books had been written on the subject. Rick was quick to respond that entire books are written about all kinds of discredited things.

True enough. It was me versus two professors on their home turf with a sympathetic audience, and there was no way that I was going to disabuse them of what they were convinced of.

Confirmation testing and theory-laden evidence are not merely philosophical notions. They are very real problems. Im reminded of all this every time a new study adds yet more confirmation to the directed adaptation story, such as the recent paper out of Nicola Iovinos lab on transgenerational epigenetic inheritance in house flies, which states:

Gametes carry parental genetic material to the next generation. Stress-induced epigenetic changes in the germ line can be inherited and can have a profound impact on offspring development.

The press release gives little indication of the controversy as it admits that these findings were once considered impossible:

It has long been thought that these epigenetic modifications never cross the border of generations. Scientists assumed that epigenetic memory accumulated throughout life is entirely cleared during the development of sperms and egg cells.

It is hard enough to see how organisms can respond intra-lifetime to environmental challenges, but how can it be inherited as well? For epigenetic changes that occur in somatic cells, that information must enter into the germ line as well. Somehow it must be incorporated into the sperm and/or egg cells.

It is an enormous problem to explain how such capabilities evolved. Not only are a large number of mutations required to make this capability work, it would not be selected for until the particular environmental condition occurred. That means that, under evolution, it would be not preserved, even if it could somehow arise by chance.

Genetic engineering has the potential to change the way we live. The science behind the agricultural, medical, and environmental achievements is spectacular, but this excitement is tempered by concern for the unknown effects of tampering with nature. How should we use genetic engineering?

DNA is the root of all inheritance and the key to understanding the basics of all biological inheritance and genetics.

The possibilities of this genetic engineering are endless, and everyone from medicine to industry is scrambling to adopt it and adapt it to their specific needs.

Genetic engineering changes or manipulates genes in order to achieve specific results, and there are many ways to "engineer" genetic material including fixing defective genes, replacing missing genes, copying or cloning genes, or combining genes.

How is genetic engineering used in food production? What political, environmental, and production obstacles could arise in the effort to label genetically engineered foods? What food traits would you like to see genetically engineered?

How could GE help in meeting growing demand for food around the world?

How can GE be used with animals? What are the benefits and risks of using genetic engineering with livestock or with endangered or extinct animals?

How does cloning work? What situations might be viewed as ethical uses of human cloning? Unethical?

What are the potential consequences, positive and negative, of discovery in the genetic engineering field? Who should be involved in determining the ethical limitations of the uses of genetic engineering?

Produced from 2001 through 2004, Iowa Public Television's Explore More online and broadcast series engages students in problems they can relate to, provides compelling content for investigation and gives students opportunities to form their own points of viewon contemporary issues.

Genetic engineering creates an unnaturally blue flower – Engadget – Engadget

Posted: August 1, 2017 at 1:47 am

The approach is generic enough that you could theoretically apply it to other flowering plants. Blue roses, anyone? There are broader possibilities, too. While the exact techniques clearly won't translate to other lifeforms, this might hint at what's required to produce blue eyes or feathers. And these color changes would be useful for more than just cosmetics. Pollinating insects tend to prefer blue, so this could help spread plant life that has trouble competing in a given habitat.

Just don't count on picking up a blue bouquet. You need a permit to sell any genetically modified organism in the US, and there's a real concern that these gene-modified flowers might spread and create havoc in local ecosystems. The research team hopes to make tweaked chrysanthemums that don't breed, but that also means you're unlikely to see them widely distributed even if they do move beyond the lab. Any public availability would likely hinge on a careful understanding of the flowers' long-term impact.

We Need to Talk About Genetic Engineering – Commentary Magazine

What began as a broad-based and occasionally sympathetic conduit for anti-Trump activists has evolved into a platform for the maladjusted to receive unhealthy levels of public scrutiny. The cycle has become a depressingly familiar. A relatively obscure member of the political class achieves viral notoriety and becomes a figure of cult-like popularity with some uncompromising display of opposition toward the president only to humiliate themselves and their followers in short order.

Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters is not the first to be feted by liberals as the embodiment of noble opposition to authoritarianism. In May, the Center for American Progress blog dubbed her the patron saint of resistance politics. Left-leaning viral-politics websites now routinely praise Waters as a Trump-bashing resistance leader, the Democratic rock star of 2017, and an all-around badass for her unflagging commitment to trashing the president as a crooked and racist liar, the Daily Beast observed. Waters was even honored by an audience of tweens and entertainers at this years MTV Movie Awards. Even a modestly curious review of Waters record would have led more cautious political actors to keep their distance. Time bombs have a habit of going off.

Zero hour arrived late Friday evening when Waters broke the news of a forthcoming putsch. Mike Pence is somewhere planning an inauguration, the congresswoman from California wrote. Priebus and Spicer will lead the transition. That sounds crazy, but its a familiar kind of crazy.

Anyone who has followed the congresswomans career knows she has a history of making inflammatory assertions for the benefit of her audience. It only takes a cursory google search to discover that, in her decade in politics, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) has named her the most corrupt member of Congress four times and the misconduct of her chief of staff ensnared her in a House Ethics Committee probe. The Resistance is willing to overlook a plethora of flaws and misdeeds as long as their prior assumptions are validated.

This is not the first time its own heroes have undercut The Resistance.

National Reviews Charles C. W. Cooke recently demonstrated why Louise Mensch, formerly a prominent poster child for The Resistance, has a habit of seeing Russians behind every darkened corner. They are responsible for riots in Missouri, Democratic losses at the polls, and Anthony Weiners libido. In Menschs imagination, a secret Republican Guard is mere moments away from dispatching this administration amid some species of constitutional coup. Cooke also noted that Mensch was elevated to unearned status as a celebrity of the Resistance by the anti-Trump commentary class desperate for what she was selling.

Menschs star has faded, but not before she managed to embarrass those who invested confidence in her sources. Those who embraced her should have been more cautious in the process. Menschs British compatriots long ago caught onto her habit of lashing out at phantoms. A prudent political class would have given her a wide berth.

25-year-old Teen Vogue columnist Lauren Duca became a sensation last December when her article accusing the president of gas lighting the nation went viral. She was festooned with praise for her work from forlorn Democratsculminating in a letter of praise from Hillary Clintonand soon found herself the subject of fawning New York Times profiles and delivering college commencement addresses without any apparent effort to vet her work.

Duca, too, became a source of bias-confirming misinformation for the left. Cute pic of Trump getting tired of winning, she tweeted with the image of an airplane going down in flames. The tweet was quickly deleted, but not before it provided a means by which the pro-Trump right could credibly undermine her integrity.

Attributable only to a plague mass hysteria, liberal Trump opponents collectively determined last December that a paranoid, 127-tweet rant was a work of unpatrolled genius. That diatribe was the work of Eric Garland, a self-described D.C. technocrat based in Missouri whos now infamous game theory polemic was an example of what he calls his spastic historical and political narratives.

Journalists and political activists who surveyed his work declared it not just compelling anti-Trump prose but near historic in its brilliance. It was anything but. Laced with profanity, exaggerated misspellings to caricature his political opponents, and an offensively indiscreet application of the caps lock, Garland threaded 9/11, Al Gore, Hurricane Katrina, Edward Snowden, and Fox News to tell the tale of how Americas sovereignty was repeatedly violated. The Resistance abandoned its better judgment.

It wasnt long before Garland had humiliated anyone who ever treated him as a credible political observer. Rupert Murdoch is a threat to Western Civilization and a Russian operative, he wrote. I WONT BE THE FIRST GARLAND OF MY LINE TO SPILL BLOOD FOR AMERICA AND THE RIGHT SIDE OF HISTORY AND NEVER THE LAST, YOU F***ERS. This kind of hyperventilating excess came as no surprise to anyone who didnt read his manic thread through tears as they struggled to come to terms with the age of Trump.

If Democrats hope to strike a favorable contrast with a lackadaisical White House, theyre not well served by surrounding themselves with reckless people. Too often, the faces of The Resistance wither in the spotlight. A serious movement attracts serious opposition. A frivolous, self-gratifying movement, well, doesnt.
