What is Biotechnology

Biotechnology is most briefly defined as the art of utilizing living organisms and their products for the production of food, drink, medicine or for other benefits to the human race, or other animal species.

Technically speaking, humans have been making use of biotechnology since they discovered farming, with the planting of seeds to control plant growth and crop production.

Animal breeding is also a form of biotechnology. More recently, cross-pollination of plants and cross-breeding of animals were macro-biological techniques in biotechnology, used to enhance product quality and/or meet specific requirements or standards.

The discovery of microorganisms and the subsequent burst of knowledge related to the causes of infectious diseases, antibiotics and immunizations could probably be counted among mans most significant, life-altering discoveries.

However, the most modern techniques in biotechnology owe their existence to the discovery of DNA and the protein products of genes, most importantly, enzymes. The discovery of the techniques essential for gene cloning allowed scientists to manipulate enzyme structure and function for specific purposes. Current scientific methods are more specific than historical techniques, as scientists now directly alter genetic material with atomic precision, using techniques otherwise known as recombinant DNA technology.

As technology advances, the many roles biotech plays in our lives increases. Since George Washington Carver, scientists have been learning how to use biochemicals isolated from plants, to produce chemical products for everyday use around the house, the first "green biotech products".

Since then, biotechnological advances can be found in nearly all sectors of industry. There are, of course, the obvious medical, pharmaceutical and food industries. Biotechnology is being used to determine cause and effect of various diseases and are used in the production of drugs.

The production of foods is enhanced by biotechnological advances that improve crop yields, introduce in-situ insect resistance and provide new ways of food preservation.

Other advances include packaging consisting of biomass plastics, or bioplastics, and built-in bioindicators for detecting contamination.

In the environmental sector, biotech has played a role in remediation of contaminated land, water and air, pest control, treatment of industrial effluents and emissions, and acid mine drainage. Bioremediation and phytoremediation are used to restore brownfields for redevelopment.

Get ready for winter!

A beautiful fall is quickly transitioning into an early winter! Along with the cooler weather, this season also brings hazards for your horses acorns and persimmons. Every year we treat multiple severe colics due to ingestion of acorns and persimmons. These colics are very hard to treat and are frequently fatal.

This time of year we often talk about winterizing your horse. When cold weather hits, horses burn extra calories to maintain body temperature. If your horse is underweight going into the winter months, it is extremely hard to maintain optimal body condition. We recommend a dental exam and a fecal test to check for internal parasites.

We also recommend starting a fat supplement now if your horse is borderline underweight. Geriatric horses are prone to dental problems and usually require extra calories to maintain body condition.

We are very pleased to welcome two new members to our staff Mrs. Megan Caldwell (left photo) and Mrs. Michelle Grabill. Megan recently graduated from the University of Arkansas with Bachelors of Animal Science. Michelle is currently in the Arkansas State University Veterinary Technician program. Both Megan and Michelle have quickly become very valuable assets to PVH.

On August 12th and 13th PVH held an Equine Gastroscopy Seminar and Clinic. On the 12th, we held an educational seminar provided by Merial Pharmaceuticals explaining equine gastric ulcer syndrome. The next day, we held a scoping lab and scoped 26 of our clients horses.

Out of the 26 horses scoped, 23 presented with grade 1-3 ulcers. These horses ranged from actively competitive barrel horses to retired show horses and pasture horses. These results prove that stomach ulcers do not only occur in active show horses.

The only way to definitively diagnose this disorder is by a gastroscopy exam. If you suspect your horse may have ulcers, give us a call.

PVH is excited to offer our patients a new era of medical treatment in regenerative medicine. We are now able to harvest, process and administer stem cell therapy to your horse, dog or cat. The stem cells are derived from your animals own fat, and processed to release the benefits of the bodys own stem cells. Because the cells come from the animals own tissue the risk for adverse reactions is minimal.

Currently we are using stem cell therapy via IV administration or local administration directly into the site of the problem. Examples would be IV administration for kidney or liver failure, with local administration directly into an arthritic joint or into the stissue around damaged vertebra.

The Equine Health & Hoof Fest was a runaway success! Veterinarians, farriers, researchers and horse owners came together in January at Back Achers Ranch in Conway with one goal in mind share information to help horses have healthier lives. This was the fourth year for the event, created by Paul Dorris Jr. of the Arkansas Horseshoeing School and Dr. Mike Pallone.Their vision is to make life better for horses by sharing information among different groups of equine practitioners. For more photos from the event, CLICK HERE.

Gene therapy for rare cause of blindness shows promise …

Posted: October 9, 2015 at 4:41 am

An experimental gene therapy has improved eyesight in patients with a rare, inherited eye disease that can cause blindness, according to its developer, Spark Therapeutics Inc.

The company said it plans to apply to the Food and Drug Administration next year for approval to market the treatment. If accepted, this would be the first gene therapy to win approval in the United States.

"We saw substantial restoration of vision in patients who were progressing toward complete blindness," Dr. Albert M. Maguire, principal investigator in the trial and professor of ophthalmology at the Perelman School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania, said in a statement.

There were no serious adverse effects associated with the treatment, the company reported.

The news comes about a week after a hospital in the U.K. announced it had performed a pioneering human embryonic stem cell operation on a patient with the aim of curing a different, more common cause of blindness known as macular degeneration.

Gene therapy involves injecting genetic material into a person's cells to treat or prevent a disease. While research in this area has been going on since the late 1990's, no such treatment has been approved in the U.S. The European Commission approved the Western world's first gene therapy in 2012 for an extremely rare disease in patients with a particular enzyme deficiency.

Spark's treatment, called SPK-RPE65, is targeted at mutations in a gene called RPE65, which plays a role in maintaining the health of the photoreceptors in the eye. The condition can progress to complete blindness.

The Phase III trial included a total of 31 participants, 21 of whom were given the treatment and 10 of whom weren't. Researchers evaluated the participants at multiple points over the course of a year for their performance in navigating a mobility course under a variety of light levels. These levels ranged from the equivalent of a "moonless summer night" to a brightly lit office, according to the statement.

"The majority of the subjects given SPK-RPE65 derived the maximum possible benefit that we could measure on the primary visual function test, and this impressive effect was confirmed by a parallel improvement in retinal sensitivity," Maguire said. "If approved, SPK-RPE65 should have a positive, meaningful impact on the lives of patients with this debilitating condition."

But much still remains unknown at this time. Spark has not yet made the actual trial data public, and it is unclear what it will take for the FDA to approve the treatment. The company said it plans to present additional data from the trial in a series of scientific meetings in the coming months.

California Stem Cell Report: Connecting With the Public …

Posted: October 8, 2015 at 12:46 am

For years the California stem cell agency has given the public access to the meetings of its governing board via a one-way audiocast over the Internet and by phone.

But patients, advocates, scientists and business folks have not had the opportunity to comment and make suggestions re the doings of the 29-member board of directors through the same method. The public could only listen unless they were on the scene.

Chiang also uses the same sort of service and company as used by the stem cell agency. But he has added an inexpensive touch that genuinely opens up the meetings to the public.

Mendelson said,

Mendelson continued,

Mendelson said that the move was generated by Chiang's desire to enhance public access and his desire to increase public participation in and increase awareness of the many boards, commissions and authorities" that he chairs.

On-the-scene public participation in CIRM meetings is slim. One of the reasons is that the sessions often require travel and overnight stays that pose barriers for many persons, particularly patients and their advocates. The agency would make it easier for its stakeholders and enhance its reputation for openness and transparency by instituting this inexpensive practice. It also fits with the goal of Randy Mills, the president of the agency, to provide more clarity in what the agency does.
