New Stem Cell Tactic Shows Promise for Heart Failure

THURSDAY, July 30, 2015 (HealthDay News) -- A new method for delivering stem cells to damaged heart muscle has shown early promise in treating severe heart failure, researchers report.

In a preliminary study, they found the tactic was safe and feasible for the 48 heart failure patients they treated. And after a year, the patients showed a modest improvement in the heart's pumping ability, on average.

It's not clear yet whether those improvements could be meaningful, said lead researcher Dr. Amit Patel, director of cardiovascular regenerative medicine at the University of Utah.

He said larger clinical trials are underway to see whether the approach could be an option for advanced heart failure.

Other experts stressed the bigger picture: Researchers have long studied stem cells as a potential therapy for heart failure -- with limited success so far.

"There's been a lot of promise, but not much of a clinical benefit yet," said Dr. Lee Goldberg, who specializes in treating heart failure at the University of Pennsylvania.

Researchers are still sorting through complicated questions, including how to best get stem cells to damaged heart muscle, said Goldberg, who was not involved in the new study.

What's "novel" in this research, he said, is the technique Patel's team used to deliver stem cells to the heart. They took stem cells from patients' bone marrow and infused them into the heart through a large vein called the coronary sinus.

Patel agreed that the technique is the advance.

"Most other techniques have infused stem cells through the arteries," Patel explained. One obstacle, he said, is that people with heart failure generally have hardened, narrowed coronary arteries, and the infused stem cells "don't always go to where they should."

Four Prentice students headed to the University of Wisconsin (UW)-Madison in mid-July for a camp geared at illuminating stem cell research and related technology for rural youth.

The local group, Hailey Enders, Carli Hora, Jesse Isaacson and Joseph Jast, joined 12 other students hailing from Tomah, Winter, and North Crawford in this unrivaled four-day experience known as the "Discovery Summer Science Camp.

Prentice School instructor Mike Dunbar said that the program, running from July 13 to July 16 gave students from our rural area the chance to see what real researchers in Madison are doing, and, because the students participated in many lab activities, helped them feel like part of the experience there.

Students got a chance to see research facilities defining the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery and other divisions of learning at UW-Madison, including the Chemistry Department. In addition, they got a firsthand look at technology used in the UW-Health Clinical Simulation Laboratory, set up at the UW- Hospital.

Their stops at research facilities brought students opportunities to run real tests used by practicing lab workers. Afterwards, students had the benefit of learning about the science underlying those hands-on activities with talks from active researchers in connected fields, according to Dunbar.

The technologies used there and the laboratory facilities provided a unique insight for these students into what is current and cutting edge, which most high school students anywhere would never get to see, Dunbar stated.

As one genuine lab task, young scientists had the opportunity to conduct live stem cell passaging, which consists of taking cultured stem cells and creating, or passaging, six entirely new cultures from the original cell material, according to Dunbar.

Via the discussion that surrounded this camp segment and the required readings students completed ahead of the camp, budding researchers learned about something known as induced pluripotent" stem cells, or IPS cells. Those cells are harvested from an adults skin and with lab manipulation, are returned to stem cell form, sparing researchers from needing to use the cells of embryos for research.

The possibilities for scientific gain with use of these cells are numerous as students found out from the talks given by researchers later in the camp, Dunbar stated.

Another session in the lab delivered a close-up look at the process of cryopreservation, made possible by the use of liquid nitrogen.

These diets gain quickly in popularity when the media hops on board, reporting the new diet fad, the rising number of adopters and testimonials of success from satisfied, slimmed-down believers, including celebrities who've lost weight on the plans. I began treating with Dr. Horn for pain in my lower back and hips. The diagnosis took a bit of time for us to figure out but when he was able to pinpoint the injury, his recommended course of treatment was conservatively aggressive to help get me back to a point where I could sit without much discomfort. At first we tried conventional modalities for treatment including Physical Therapy and injections. As these treatments began to have minimal improvements, Dr. Horn recommended PRP. He walked me through how the PRP works and suggested I do some research to see if I was willing to try this modality of treatment. As we discussed the treatment, Dr. Horn was very clear on the fact that this may take multiple treatments. I asked, "What is multiple?" He said, "At least twomaybe three or four." After the first treatment, I thought, "Why would I put myself through that again?" Then I began to see the improvements as time went on and I continued with therapy. Then came a second plateau and we tried many other alternatives. I agreed to a second round of PRP and the improvement I had was remarkable! It has been well over a year and I continue to see improvements in my hips, which I believe are fundamentally due to the PRP and Physical Therapy combination. The physical therapy was only going to get my so far and the PRP has pushed my healing well over to the top.
