Why the eye is nature's miracle

Posted: October 1, 2014 at 5:52 am

Eye of the beholder: The miracle of our sight.

When the body of Dr Yoshiki Sasai, an eminent Japanese biologist, was discovered in August this year, his death was widely mourned across the world of science. Not just for the abrupt end to his glittering career, for which he won several awards including the 2010 Osaka Science Prize, and was appointed the laureate of the 2012 Inoue Prize for Science. Nor because of the tragic manner of his death: the 52-year-old was found hanged in his own laboratory - an apparent suicide, some say, after a scandal over a research paper he'd co-authored in January.

Instead, the scientific world lamented what, perhaps, Dr Sasai was about to achieve. As one of the directors at the RIKEN Centre for Developmental Biologyin Kobe, he was one of the world's leading experts in stem cell technology. His team had pioneered incredible new techniques for creating organ-like structures - making giant strides towards a future where replacements for our failing human organs could be grown in a Petri dish.

Most tragically, the months before his death had heralded Sasai's biggest achievement. His team had already grown partial pituitary glands and even bits of the brain, but now he'd coaxed embryonic stem cells into forming the functioning tissue of arguably the most complex and scrutinised organ in the entire animal kingdom.

Sasai had grown an eye. And in doing so, he'd also helped resolve a scientific obsession that had lasted centuries.

In very basic form, the eye is thought to have first developed in animals about 550 million years ago. But such is its perfect design - its infinite adaptability, and irreducible complexity - that many argue it is proof of the divine itself. Even today, Christians and creationists argue that Charles Darwin himself was troubled by its existence - seizing upon an (oft-misquoted) aside in Origin of Species, where Darwin remarked that the whole idea of something so flawless "could have been formed by natural selection, seems, I freely confess, absurd in the highest degree".

The eye has become a focal point for biologists, ophthalmologists, physicists and many other branches of science ever since. So when the Spanish neuroscientist Santiago Ramon y Cajal made the first anatomical diagrams of neurons and the retina in 1900, it stoked a century of attempts by biologists to unlock the eye's secrets.

And there have been several discoveries. Unlike our ears and nose, for example, which never stop growing our entire lives, our eyes remain the same size from birth. Then there's the complicated process of irrigation, lubrication, cleaning and protection that happens every time we blink an average of 4,200,000 times a year.

Meso Foundation and University of Chicago Medicine Present Chicago Conference on Mesothelioma

Posted: October 1, 2014 at 5:50 am

Alexandria, VA (PRWEB) September 30, 2014

The Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (Meso Foundation) has released the agenda for its October 10th regional conference, which will take place at the Palmer House Hilton hotel in Chicago, Illinois, in collaboration with the University of Chicago Medicine. The conference is a one-day event geared to patients and family members, covering a variety of topics related to mesothelioma and presented by local and regional area experts.

The agenda can be viewed on the Meso Foundations website at http://www.curemeso.org/chicago.

The event begins at 9:30am and concludes with a cocktail reception at 5pm. The registration cost is $25, and includes breakfast and lunch. Online registration is available.

Some of the covered topics will include imaging, genetics, surgery, chemotherapy, novel treatments, stem cells, immunotherapy, and resources for patients and families.

The conference is chaired by Mary Hesdorffer, APRN, who is the executive director of the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation, and by Hedy Lee Kindler, MD, the director of the mesothelioma and gastrointestinal oncology programs at the University of Chicago Medicine.

The Meso Foundation is also the host of an annual symposium, taking place in March of every year in the Washington, DC area.

Mesothelioma is a malignant tumor of the lining of the lung, abdomen, or heart known to be caused by exposure to asbestos. Medical experts consider it one of the most aggressive and deadly of all cancers. An estimated one-third of those who develop mesothelioma were exposed while serving in the Navy or working in shipyards.

ABOUT THE MESOTHELIOMA APPLIED RESEARCH FOUNDATION The Meso Foundation is the only 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to eradicating mesothelioma and easing the suffering caused by this cancer. The Meso Foundation actively seeks philanthropic support to fund peer-reviewed mesothelioma research; provide patient support services and education; and advocate Congress for increased federal funding for mesothelioma research. The Meso Foundation is the only non-government funder of peer reviewed scientific research to establish effective treatments for mesothelioma and, ultimately, a cure for this extremely aggressive cancer. To date, the Foundation has awarded over $8.7 million to research. More information is available at http://www.curemeso.org.

Alaska Trip – Texas Stem Cell

Posted: October 1, 2014 at 5:49 am

The soft hum of two motorcycles drifted down the Alaska Highway, entering the Arctic Circle. Green grass and soaring mountains surrounded the pale grey road. These men were a long way from Texas, but had just embarked on of the most memorable journey of their lifetime.

The familiar saying Practice what you preach comes to mind when thinking of Tyler, Texas physician, Dr. David Fletcher. With an office dedicated to helping patients live younger, Doc Fletcher follows his own advice. In July of 2011, he, along with long-time friend, Tim King, embarked on an adventure of which most souls could only dream. A motorcycle ride across the states, ending at the beautiful Arctic Circle.

The men had pointed their bikes north out of East Texas on the sixth of July, traveling a total of two weeks toward the Arctic Circle. The men would not see the tall green pines of East Texas again until their return on the fifth of August.

Docs passion for thrills started out at a young age while growing up in Waco. His father owned a Cushman dealership, quickly sparking the interest of the young boy in two-wheel locomotion.

When I was little, my daddy owned a Cushman dealership; I cut my teeth on those things when I was just a kid, Doc said with a reminiscing tone. I raced motocross for a number of years, then I quit when I was about 40. His love for pushing the limit didnt stop there; he then took up long-distance running.

About a year ago, I got to thinking, Doc said. At my age, it would be fun to try to go to the Arctic Circle and back.

They did just that. Doc and his long-time cowboy friend Tim King took off on a 10,000-mile trip, traveling up through Colorado, Yellowstone and then up through Canada, passing through a number of national parks and forests. The bikes roared on up British Columbia and then through the Yukon Territory. The sights the men witnessed were breathtaking, and at times, terrifying. The mens original plan was to camp out Gunsmoke cowboy style at night, but they quickly changed their minds.

We were going to camp out, but by the time we got to Colorado where it was cool enough to camp, it started raining. It rained for the next seven days solid, and by that time we had seen so many darn bears, and there were all kinds of reports in the paper about these bears eating people. We decided that if our wives would keep on paying the visa bill, wed try to find a place to stay that was on the inside, Doc laughingly said.

Bears wouldnt be the only things the men needed to keep a watchful eye for. During their first homeward bound day of traveling, Docs BMW motorcycle skidded off a cliff. He and the bike went end over end down toward the Chilkoot River 500 feet below.
