Andain Inc. Discusses and Provides Update on its Breakthrough Stem Cell Therapy for the Treatment and Regeneration of …

Posted: April 2, 2013 at 8:41 pm

ARAD, Israel, April 2, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --

Andain Inc. (ANDN) ("Andain" or the "Company"), a company engaged in commercializing novel technologies in biotech, medical and life sciences fields through its incubator program, today discussed and provided an update on its breakthrough, innovative stem cell therapy for treating and regenerating severely damaged muscle tissue.

Andain's innovative stem cell therapy technology rehabilitates and heals damaged muscle tissue by initiating regenerative myogenic cells (cardiac muscle), as well as striated muscle cells (skeletal muscle) growth in damaged tissue sites such as the myocardium (cardiac muscle) following an myocardial infarction (heart attack), limb pressure ulcers, and degenerative muscular diseases. The short term application is directed towards the treatment of patients with peripheral vascular disease, while the long term application is focused on the healing and regeneration of cardiac muscle following acute myocardial infarction or chronic heart failure.

Employing a patient's own cells (autologic transplantation), the Company's unique technology and process diverts the patient's own cells into specific targeted myogenic cells, which can then be inserted into the damaged tissue and accelerates the healing process. The administered myogenic or skeletal stem cells work as a network, acting in exactly the same way that the cells of skeletal and heart muscle tissue perform, and actually replenish the existing cells, thus strengthening the intended injured site following the transplantation process. This process can be utilized for different clinical pathologies as mentioned above and can also be utilized for patient using different donor as the source of the stem cells.

Our developed technology and protocols results in a promising safe regenerative therapy, without side effects, tissue rejection or the requirement of suppressive immunological treatment or malignant tumor hazard. Our technology also provides a simple, fast and safe treatment, overcoming technological difficulties associated with using other stem cell therapies sources such as embryonic, placenta, or umbilical cord blood cells that require cryogenic storage.

Andain's President and CEO Sam Elimelech, commented, "The field of stem cell therapeutics is in its early stages of growth as companies and researchers continue to uncover the vast potential and promising uses for them in the treatment and prevention of countless tissue injuries and diseases. We are in an excellent position to capitalize on the emergence of this new market. It is our belief that Orcell's cutting-edge technology and process is unique in regard to the fact that it allows for the safe and efficient directing of the patients own cells as into myogenic cells or striated muscle cells, thus eliminating the hazards associated with rejection and malignant tumors. Via our industrial incubator platform and expert scientific team, we look forward to helping Orcell commence their clinical trials later this year and make considerable progress of their technology and process closer to market."

Andain's incubator platform is currently undergoing with its stem cell technology a build-up of GLP (Good Laboratory Practice) production line as a preparation for the FDA approval stage with clinical trials scheduled for Q1 2014 at one of the foremost Heart centers in Israel under the direction of Professor Mickey Scheinowitz, one of Israel's leading scientists who gained vast experience in the understanding and treating of cardiovascular diseases.

Spas, salons warned on stem cell therapy

Posted: April 1, 2013 at 11:42 am

By Tina G. Santos Philippine Daily Inquirer

MANILA, PhilippinesStem cell therapy at spa centers and salons? Watch out, government agents are coming.

Health Secretary Enrique Ona says no clinic or hospital in the Philippines can offer stem cell therapy without accreditation from the Department of Health (DOH).

Speaking to reporters last week, Ona noted that while many centers are advertising stem cell therapy treatment, none of them have the approval of the health department.

As of now we have not accredited any clinic or even hospital offering stem cell therapy yet, Ona said.

Admitting that the DOH doesnt have the police power to close down erring health centers, Ona said the department would coordinate with other governmental agencies like the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and local governments to prevent spas and salons from offering stem cell treatment.

We will issue a warning for them to stop [doing stem cell therapy]. But if they continue despite warnings from us, thats when we will move to close them down, Ona said.

Stem cell therapy and treatment, which are becoming popular here and abroad, are medical procedures that deal with ailments by replacing malignant cells with healthy cells.

Only medical doctors with the right training can perform stem cell treatment.

The Mystery about Cyanide Taste

Posted: March 31, 2013 at 7:38 am

What is potassium cyanide??

A chemical compound with the chemical formula KCN is commonly known as the Potassium cyanide. This is a colorless crystalline compound, highly soluble in water and is similar in appearance as that of sugar. Potassium cyanide is considered to be highly toxic in nature. Potassium cyanide is considered to be one of the most deadly compounds being discovered till date.

Production of Potassium Cyanide:

Potassium Cyanide can be produced mainly by treating hydrogen cyanide in the presence of a fifty percent of an aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide. After that the aqueous solution is either evaporated in a vacuum or by treating the form amide in the presence of potassium hydroxide. On an average per year approximately fifty thousand tons of potassium cyanide are being produced all over the world.

Use of Potassium Cyanide:

Potassium Cyanide is mainly used for the purpose of electroplating, organic synthesis of a number of chemical compounds, gold mining and so on. In accordance with the large scale use of Potassium Cyanide, it is also used in smaller scale applications like in the jewelry manufacturing industry for chemical buffing and gliding. Other than those mentioned earlier, Potassium Cyanide is also used by the entomologists as it is an excellent killing agent, and it has the unique capability of causing minimum damage to the highly fragile specimens.

Mystery about Potassium Cyanide:

Since, the time of its invention, the biggest mystery that has been surrounded with Potassium Cyanide, is about the taste of it. Due to the fact that Potassium Cyanide is exceedingly poisonous substance and can cause death of a person in seconds, the taste of it has remained a mystery or a fact yet to be known to the world. Though, many researches and tests have been conducted to find the taste of Potassium Cyanide but none of them could come up with the appropriate result.

Different views about the taste of Potassium Cyanide:

There has been number of views among the scientists about the taste of the Potassium Cyanide, some of them are as follows:

· Since on hydrolysis of KCN, the resultant compound that are formed are KOH and HCN, which are strong base and weak base respectively, Potassium Cyanide is confirmed to be basic nature. Since at room temperature HCN is a gas which evolves and the solution is expected to have more KOH, so the taste of Potassium Cyanide is assumed to be bitter.

· Some, scientists who have died while finding the taste of Potassium cyanide, could only write the alphabet “S” before dying, so it is not conclusive whether it is sour, sweet or salty in taste.

Conclusion:

Though, a huge number of scientists sacrificed their lives in order to find the taste of Potassium cyanide, but it remained a mystery for long, until and unless a goldsmith from India named MP Prasad in an attempt to commit suicide with the help of Potassium cyanide could finally reveal the taste of Potassium cyanide. As per the suicide note of him the taste of Potassium Cyanide is very much acrid, that is irritatingly harsh and sharp. This fact about the taste of Potassium cyanide is approved by the World Health Organization and is marked as an extraordinary discovery in the field of science.

Health Beat: Mending mouths: Rebuilding jawbones with stem cells

Posted: March 29, 2013 at 11:48 pm

Whether its destroyed by a bullet, disease, or a bad infection, doctors now have a new way to rebuild bone in the face. Stem cells might hold the key to the future.

Traditionally, to rebuild bone in the face, you have to take bone from the hip or leg and surgically implant it. A new procedure means a shorter hospital stay and less recovery time.

Dr. Robert Marx, an oral surgeon and professor of surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, examined Ramsey Hasans new mouth after the procedure.

"A wisdom tooth extraction went bad. I lost a significant portion of my jaw," said Hasan, who had to have part of his jaw removed.

Marx used a surgical technique, called In-Situ tissue engineering, to grow Hasan a new jaw.

Stem cells are harvested from the hip bone during reconstructive surgery. Cadaver bone and a special protein called BMP help those stem cells grow bone. The components are then secured with a titanium plate, Marx said.

In six months, the bone is absolutely normal. Any of the cadaver bone is dissolved and replaced by the patients own bone, stimulated by the BMP, and actually produced by the bone marrow," explained Marx.

Now, Hasan is healed and happy with the results.

"I now have a healthy gum, a healthy jaw, which is most important, and some fake teeth that dont feel fake, Hasan said.

Marx helped pioneer the stem cell procedure at the University of Miami. Right now, he is the only one performing it, but he's currently teaching the technique to other doctors around the country.
