Nature on the IOM and the California Stem Cell Agency

Posted: January 24, 2013 at 8:48 pm

The journal Nature today said on its
web site that the California stem cell agency plans to make a “few
changes” in response to a critical report from the Institute of
Medicine(IOM).

A short piece by Monya Baker on the agency's response yesterday summarized
some of the IOM recommendations and the CIRM response. Baker wrote,
She said,

"Other IOM recommendations were only
indirectly addressed by (CIRM Chairman J.T.) Thomas’ plan. The IOM report had stated
that the board should restrict itself to an 'oversight' role
rather than an 'operational' role. Thomas’s recommendations
instead described ways to avoid overlapping duties. His own role as
chair is to handle 'external affairs' whereas CIRM’s president
will be to handle scientific and internal affairs."

Baker also carried the favorable
comments from John M. Simpson of Consumer Watchdog.

The Phacilitate Cell & Gene Therapy Forum is a preeminent industry-led meeting designed to help advance regulatory, manufacturing, R&D and commercial strategies and drive cell and gene therapy products forward. The Forum enables executives from global cell therapy, gene therapy and tissue engineering companies, representatives of big pharma and big biotech, regulators and regulatory experts, and public and private investors to meet and share information on the leading edge of the regenerative medicine sector.

About StemCells, Inc.

StemCells, Inc. is engaged in the research, development, and commercialization of cell-based therapeutics and tools for use in stem cell-based research and drug discovery. The Company's lead therapeutic product candidate, HuCNS-SC(R) cells (purified human neural stem cells), is currently in development as a potential treatment for a broad range of central nervous system disorders. In a Phase I clinical trial in Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease (PMD), a fatal myelination disorder in children, the Company has shown preliminary evidence of progressive and durable donor-derived myelination in all four patients transplanted with HuCNS-SC cells. The Company is conducting a Phase I/II clinical trial in chronic spinal cord injury in Switzerland and recently reported positive interim data for the first patient cohort. The Company is also conducting a Phase I/II clinical trial in dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and is pursuing preclinical studies in Alzheimer's disease. StemCells also markets stem cell research products, including media and reagents, under the SC Proven(R) brand. Further information about StemCells is available at http://www.stemcellsinc.com.

‘Real’ Meat From 3D Printer in the Works – Video

#39;Real #39; Meat From 3D Printer in the Works
Meat from a 3D printer is said to be in the works. Modern Meadow is using a 3D bioprinter to create slabs of meat that can be consumed and don #39;t require animals to be slaughtered. Utilizing stem cells obtained from a biopsy, bioengineered meat can be printed from a biocartridge containing something called bioink particles that are used to create living tissue. The co-founder of Modern Meadow Andras Forgacs said: "if you look at the resource intensity of everything that goes into a hamburger, it is an environmental train wreck." Andras Forgacs is working with his father Professor Gabor Forgacs from the University of Missouri on the project, which has received funding from the Thiel Foundation to the tune of three hundred fifty thousand dollars. Other bioengineering feats are being tested with the bioprinting technology. Regenerative medicine has only been tested on animals and is not ready for use on humans. The meat being printed is still in its test phase and is not yet fit for human consumption. The process of replicating biological material can be very complex, but scientists have been exploring the options. What do you think? Would you eat meat that was printed from a machine using stem cell technology?

Stem Cells from Blood Vessels for Bone Marrow Transplant – Video

Posted: January 24, 2013 at 3:41 pm

Stem Cells from Blood Vessels for Bone Marrow Transplant
Ann Zovein, MD, studies stem cells with the goal of creating a more promising source of cells for bone marrow transplantation. The stem cells that spin off all blood types originate in the walls of blood vessels in the embryo. Zovein aims to find a way to use blood vessels as a source of stem cells that can be expanded in the lab to generate an off-the-shelf supply. http://www.ucsf.edu

BE ALIVE episode 3 part1 for Laminine
Specification of Laminine - Fibroblast Growth Factor - 2 LAMININE - A Functional Superfood For The 21st Century Nature #39;s perfect food has long been considered to be the lowly egg. The biological value of its protein is second only to mother #39;s milk for its ability to promote cell growth, repair and regeneration. Yet, the secret power of the egg, is only beginning to be understood. One man, ahead of his time, discovered the potent adaptogenic effect contained within a bio-rich extract taken from a fertilized egg on the ninth day of development. Taken at the peak of the first developmental phase, just before the differentiation of cells, this special extract nourishes the body with such a pure source of nutrition and "life force" that it acts as an adaptogen promoting homeostasis throughout the body. The results can be remarkable. What is Laminine? Laminine is a complete Synergy of : 22 Amino Acids Trace Minerals Vitamins Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF) Laminine contains a patented bio-rich extract from fertilized eggs that acts as a powerful "adaptogen". To this base ingredient additional amino acids from plant and marine sources are added to create a complete amino acid profile. The proprietary formula contains 22 amino acids, trace minerals and vitamins. It is also the only known food source of Fibroblast Growth Factor-2 (abundant before birth) which is thought to mobilize and instruct the body #39;s stem cells to do their repair work. It is believed that these instructions ...
