German Court Decision May Strengthen International Stem Cell Corporation’s Position in European Market

Posted: December 8, 2012 at 3:50 am

CARLSBAD, CA--(Marketwire - Dec 7, 2012) - International Stem Cell Corporation ( OTCQB : ISCO ) (www.internationalstemcell.com), a biotechnology company focused on the development of therapeutic products using parthenogenetic stem cells, heralds the recent decision by the German Federal Court of Justice, in the Greenpeace vs Brstle patent case, which may allow ISCO to take a leading position in the European market.

This important ruling strengthens ISCO's position that parthenogenetic technology may be an acceptable method of producing banks of human pluripotent stem cell (hpSC) lines and derivatives for the commercial therapeutic markets in Europe.Under the ruling, patent restrictions will remain on other stem cell technologies, including embryonic stem cells, that require the destruction of human embryos. The ruling is especially timely in light of ISCO's recent announcement of the creation of new clinical grade human parthenogenetic stem cell lines in the United States.

Leading stem cell biologist Professor Albrecht Mller, of the Center for Experimental Molecular Medicine, University of Wrzburg, Germany, comments, "Being able to patent cells and cell products is key to building a successful stem cell based biotechnology industry in Europe. We have already shown that hpSCs have tremendous potential to treat neurological diseases, and this new ruling makes hpSC and their derivatives significantly more attractive for the European market."

Dr. Andrey Semechkin, CEO and Co-Chairman of ISCO, continues, "This ruling may provide ISCO with a distinct advantage in being able to receive patent protection in the European Union. However, because Europe's highest court, the European Court of Justice, may re-evaluate earlier guidelines based on this resolution, there may be further changes.Nevertheless, it is clear that this decision indicates that European courts are focusing on fertilization as a factor when considering the patentability of stem cell derived products."

About International Stem Cell Corporation

International Stem Cell Corporation (ISCO) is focused on the therapeutic applications of human parthenogenetic stem cells (hpSCs) and the development and commercialization of cell-based research and cosmetic products.ISCO's core technology, parthenogenesis, results in the creation of pluripotent human stem cells from unfertilized oocytes (eggs) hence avoiding ethical issues associated with the use or destruction of viable human embryos.ISCO scientists have created the first parthenogenetic, homozygous stem cell line that can be a source of therapeutic cells for hundreds of millions of individuals of differing genders, ages and racial background with minimal immune rejection after transplantation. hpSCs offer the potential to create the first true stem cell bank, UniStemCell. ISCO also produces and markets specialized cells and growth media for therapeutic research worldwide through its subsidiary Lifeline Cell Technology (www.lifelinecelltech.com), and stem cell-based skin care products through its subsidiary Lifeline Skin Care (www.lifelineskincare.com). Shawn Chavez, PhD, talks about research on selecting healthy embryos for IVF
During in-vitro fertilization (IVF), physicians much choose among many embryos to pick the ones that are most likely to produce a successful pregnancy and health child. Shawn Chavez, PhD, a researcher at the Stanford Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine, talks about an automated time-lapse recording system that can accurately detect which embryos are healthiest. She discusses new research showing that a parameter called "fragmentation" is important.From:institutesofmedicineViews:3 0ratingsTime:02:05More inEducation

Nina Tandon: Could tissue engineering mean personalized medicine?
Each of our bodies is utterly unique, which is a lovely thought until it comes to treating an illness -- when every body reacts differently, often unpredictably, to standard treatment. Tissue engineer Nina Tandon talks about a possible solution: Using pluripotent stem cells to make personalized models of organs on which to test new drugs and treatments, and storing them on computer chips. (Call it extremely personalized medicine.) TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world #39;s leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Faces of UVic Research: Leigh Anne Swayne
Dr. Leigh Anne Swayne is a neuroscientist and a professor at the University of Victoria. Her research focus is to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying the birth of new neurons. Her work will contribute to our knowledge of the bioelectric control of neural stem cells, and, in the long-term, may assist in the evaluation of specific ion channels as targets to promote brain repair. In this video, she discusses neural stem cells and ion channels in the brain and their potential in brain repair after damage, such as a stroke. Stem Cell Research Using Embryonic Cells Rough Draft
The argument that I am making with my remix video is that stem cell research should not be allowed to use embryonic stem cells since it terminates life. There are different types of cells that could be used for stem cell research, for example Adult Cells.
